NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware men's lacrosse head coach Ben DeLuca has added alum Jake Hervada to his staff as a volunteer assistant for the upcoming school year.Â
Hervada was a member of the Blue Hens men's lacrosse program from 2016-21. On the field, he was a three-time captain. He was a 2021 USILA Senior All-Star Game selection and was a member of the 2021 men's lacrosse team that won the Colonial Athletic Association Regular Season Championship. He ranks ninth in Blue Hens history in faceoff wins with 306. He is one of 10 former Blue Hens to reach over 300 faceoff wins.Â
Off the field, he was a member of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll honors from 2018-2020. In addition, he was a two-times Dean's List recipient, he was the program's first ever recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholarship award, which honors one undergraduate student in each sport who has excelled in the classroom (3.5+ GPA) as well as on the athletic field while demonstrating a commitment to community service and student leadership. He also was a member of the National Society of Leadership & Success Delaware chapter.Â
Â
What made you want to be a coach?
Â
I have always had a passion for coaching and leadership, but especially in lacrosse. I love lacrosse, and there are so many people who have helped me along the way. I hope I can pass along some of what has been taught to me, to the next generation of Delaware Lacrosse.Â
Â
What made you choose Delaware as a student-athlete and what has made you want to come back to UD specifically in a coaching role?
Â
I think anyone who knows me knows that the Delaware Men's Lacrosse program means the world to me. The coaching staff, players, and alumni are like family, and the relationships I made throughout my time here will last a lifetime. Under the leadership of Chrissi Rawak and Jordan Skolnick, I have seen the athletics department grow at UD grow exponentially since their arrival, and am excited to see where we are headed in the years to come. Â
Â
Where does your passion for lacrosse stem from?
Â
Lacrosse has been a major part of my life since a very young age. My father played lacrosse in college, and my brother and I had a stick in our hands for as long as I can remember.Â
Â
You were one of the alums leading the charge for the Blue Hens this past on social media as UD made its run in the NCAA Tournament. As an alum, how special was it to watch last years team do so well?
Â
It was awesome to see the success the team was able to achieve late in the year last season. There is a ton of support from our alumni, dating back many years, and they are a huge part of the success the program has been able to accomplish.Â
Â
What's something that you're going to bring to this coaching role that will help the young guys out?
Â
After being a member of the team as a player with the Juniors, Seniors, and 5th years, I obviously know those guys extremely well. Having that experience with them, particularly on the field, hopefully I can bring somewhat of a new perspective to our players and our team.Â
