Women’s Soccer Falls to Sacred Heart

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware Women's Soccer team fell to visiting Sacred Heart, 3-1, this afternoon at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
"I thought the girls responded really well today at home against SHU," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "We dominated the ball, created a litany of chances but at the end of the day, we need to make those count. Making the jump from playing great to winning is hard but we are close. This is a great UD team. It'll come together."
It was a rainy day for the Blue Hens as visibility was limited in the first half of the game. It didn't stop Delaware from being able to move the ball and take an early 1-0 lead over the visitors.
Sara D'Appolonia scored her fourth goal of the season when she sailed the ball past the Sacred Heart goalkeeper to give Delaware the edge.
Sacred Heart tied the game in the 52nd minute after a free kick in the corner landed inside the box and was kicked around before SHU's Grace O'Hara got a foot on it to sneak it past Mia Reed.
In the 61st minute, Sacred Heart took the lead on a made penalty kick in the second half after a foul was called in the top of the box. It was the first made attempted penalty kick against the Blue Hens this season.
The visitors added on a goal in the 89th minute to seal the 3-1 win ove the Blue Hens.
Delaware (1-4-3) had 12 shots, nine in the first half.
Sacred Heart (3-3-1) had five shots and made six saves in the game.
Delaware will not have a midweek game. The Blue Hens return to action on Sunday, Sept. 18 at Princeton for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
