Minneapolis – Cross country took the trip up north on Friday, traveling to Minnesota to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational for the first time since 2006. It was the team's first competition outside of Delaware this season.
In a field of 224 runners featuring several Big Ten schools, freshman Nina Sgambelluri paced the Blue Hens in Minneapolis, finishing the 6K course in 52nd place with a time of 21:56.0.
"Nina ran extremely well, starting in 86th place at the first mile and getting all the way to 52nd place," head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele said. "She did a really good job of patience, passing that many people is not easy to do and I think it was a great race for her today."
Also finishing in the top 100 were Autumn Sands, who placed 84th with a time of 22:24.6, and Sarah Daniels, who crossed the finish line in 88th place with a time of 22:29.3. The Blue Hens also saw Katie Hally finish in 131st place with a time of 23:24.9.
"Going into the race, we told the girls three things to remember: patience, focus and pressure," Iyevbele said. "I thought the girls did a really good job of being conservative and using patience, focus and pressure to their advantage. Today was a huge win in terms of the preparation, especially being on a new course, and the confidence we showed out there."
Among 20 competitive institutions, Delaware finished 15th in scoring with a mark of 423, finishing ahead of Temple, Wichita State, North Dakota, St. Thomas and UNLV. Utah earned the team title with 85 points, while Cal Baptist placed second with 95. Michigan State rounded out the scoring three with 102 points. Utah senior Emily Venters earned the individual title with a time of 20:33.2.
The Blue Hens travel to Bethlehem, Pa. next weekend, taking part in the 48th annual Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University.
