Men's Soccer Battles Back In Second Half To Earn Tie Against UNCW
9/24/2022 3:22:00 PM | Men's Soccer
NEWARK, Del. - Delaware's men's soccer team played UNCW to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium. Brandon Sengphachanh and Sam Donnellan both scored goals in the second half for the Blue Hens (2-5-2,0-3-1) to overcome a halftime deficit, while Adam Vik made four saves.
Vik made two big saves in the 18th and 19th minute to keep UNCW (3-1-4, 2-0-2) off the scoreboard. Vik had his best save of the half in the 38th minute, diving to his left to prevent another Seahawks' goal. However, UNCW turned a free-kick opportunity into a goal by Gabe Mercer in the 43rd after a foul was called on Delaware just outside the box.
Delaware knotted the match up at one in the 61st. Immediately after he was substituted into the game, Sengphachanh ricocheted a shot off the left post and redirected into the back right of the net. It was Sengphachanh's third career goal, and his first since March 14, 2021 against Northeastern. In the 72nd minute, Alonso Rodriguez connected with Donnellan for the go-ahead goal. Donnellan now has five career goals in his first nine games, and maintains his tie for the CAA lead in goals scored with Harrison Coron of Drexel. Rodriguez's assist was his first as Blue Hen. The Seahawks' Josef Hefele scored the game-tying goal in the 79th minute.
Delaware has a week off from game-action before traveling to Hofstra to play the Pride in Hempstead, N.Y. on Oct. 1 at 5:00 p.m.
