Track & Field Opens 2023 Calendar Year at TCNJ Lion Indoor Invitational

NEW YORK – The University of Delaware track & field team returned to the track for the first time in the 2023 calendar year. The Blue Hens headed to the Big Apple to compete at the TCNJ Lions Indoor Invitational, hosted by The College of New Jersey inside the Armory Track & Field Center Saturday evening and set 14 new personal-best times headlined by a Hannah Lindgren victory.
Lindgren found herself crossing the 3000m finish line first with a personal-best time of 10:12.48 to win the race. The next Blue Hen to cross also with career-best times were Danielle Eshelman (10:26.03, fifth place), Tiffany Herrera (10:37.11, 10th place), Anna Cleary (10:53.00, 16th place) and Grace Chesley (10:56.73, 17th place). Alicia Lenor rounded out the Blue Hens' appearance in the 3000m with a 34th place finish (11:30.79).
To open the 60m dash preliminaries, the shining moment came from the rookie Taylor Johnson, who ran a PB time of 7.89 (fifth place) to qualify for the finals in her debut in the Blue & Gold. Following Johnson was Shylehn Ebuenga-Smith (13th place) and Kamylin Padgham (14th place), making their season debuts running a 8.04 and 8.07, respectively, while Ava Scheibe was right behind them crossing the finish line in 8.71 (41st place). The trio of Johnson (PB 25.42), Ebuenga-Smith (26.35) and Padgham (26.73) also competed in the 200m, where they placed third, 10th and 14th, respectively.
Marissa Dailey entered the mile race with a time of 5:31.96 and obliterated it by setting a new time of 5:14.92 to finish in fifth place. Lindsey Volkman was right behind Dailey with a personal-best time of 5:19.38 (eighth place) and Carolyn Coletti followed with a PB time of 5:25.14 (16th place). Jessica Stratton rounded out the Blue Hen mile lineup with a time of 5:27.22 (20th place).
Leading the way in the 400m was Marie-Frederique Poulin, where the junior captured a third place finish (57.62). Carly Schmidt set a personal-best time of 59.29, which was good enough for a sixth place finish while Melady Brown finished in 22nd place with a time of 1:03.29.
Hannah Smalley was the lone Blue Hen racing in the 800m where she finished in sixth place with a PB time of 2:24.94.
Destiny DeBlock headlined the Blue & Gold in the 60m hurdles, where she was the lone Blue Hen to qualify for the finals with a time of 9.63 (ninth place). She improved on her time in the finals, finishing in 9.57, which was good enough for seventh place. Also competing in the prelims were Makiyah Cannon-Price (9.77, 10th place) and Jayde McDermid making her collegiate debut with a personal-best time of 9.85 (13th place). Mayson Light rounded out the Blue Hens with a time of 11.05.
DeBlock also saw action in the high jump where she placed fifth with a mark of 1.60m (fifth place) while Bridget Joyce competed in the pole vault setting a mark of 3.50m (fifth place).
Kosie Nkwonta launched the shot put 12.78m (fourth place) while in the triple jump Biola Adeleye (11th place) and Jahnia Hodge (17th place) leaped 10.68m and PB 10.31, respectively. Mackenzie Stephens competed in the weight throw and launched one for 12.67m (11th place).
