Women’s Basketball Storms Past North Carolina A&T, 69-52

GREENSBORO, N.C. - ROAD WARRIORS! The University of Delaware women's basketball team was determined to take North Carolina by storm and succeeded. The Blue Hens (10-6, 3-2 CAA) snapped new CAA foe North Carolina A&T (11-6, 5-1 CAA) six game winning streak with a dominating 69-52 road victory headlined by quartet of double digit scorers.
Kharis Idom led a hot start for the Blue Hens with an eight point first quarter, as Delaware jumped out to a 19-16 lead in the opening period. Delaware started off going up 13-6 in the first four minutes, with three-point makes by Idom, Jewel Smalls, and Tara Cousins. After North Carolina A&T cut it to a one possession game, Idom and Rebecca Demeke both made three-pointers to push the lead back up to seven. The Aggies scored the final four points of the half to cut the Blue Hen lead to three, however.
With the score tied at 20 with 7:44 remaining, Delaware scored six straight points before an Aggies layup, then ripped off a 17-0 run to take a 43-22 lead. Six different players scored for Delaware, with Idom and Demeke leading the charge with five points each while Demi Burdick and Klarke Sconiers scoring four each. Delaware shot a blistering 8-13 from the field and 4-7 from beyond the arc in the second quarter, outscoring the Aggies 23-2 over a seven minute stretch to take a 43-22 lead into the locker room.
The Aggies were able to cut the lead down to 14 with 5:05 to go in the third quarter, but the Blue Hen defense held N.C. A&T to just two points and 1-5 shooting to close out the period. Demeke drained a coner three for Delaware to take the 58-36 advantage into the final quarter.
Nine straight points by the Aggies made it a 58-43 game at the 7:47 mark to begin the fourth. A Sconiers' and-one jump started a 10-0 spurt for Delaware, with Cousins capping off the run with a jumper, giving the Blue Hens their largest lead of the day, 23 points (68-45), sealing Delaware's second consecutive victory.
Idom led all scorers by tying her season-best 18 points (7-9 FG, 4-4 3PT) to go along with five rebounds, three assists and one steal. Smalls followed with 12 points, all from draining four triples, to go with seven rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal. Sconiers chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals while Demeke poured in a career best 11 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 3PT) and pulled down four rebounds off the bench. Pippin grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jazmin Harris paced A&T with 12 points off the pine while Jordyn Dorsey and D'Mya Tucker added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Delaware shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the field, 54.5 percent (12-22) from the beyond the arc, and 64.7 percent (11-17) from the free throw line. N.C. A&T connected on 29.2 percent (21-72) from the field, 15.4 percent (4-26) from three-point territory, and 85.7 percent (6-7) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Aggies in rebounds (48-35), assists (17-8), bench points (17-16), and blocks (3-0). The Blue Hens' 12 made three-pointers also tied a program record, also done on March 6, 2013 against Georgia State.

Delaware will return to the First State next Friday, Jan. 20 and will face Towson inside Bob Carpenter Center. Opening tip is slated for 7 p.m.
