Volleyball Completes Reverse Sweep Over Charleston

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball completed a reverse sweep of Charleston to win in five sets (23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-10) on Oct. 1 at Bob Carpenter Center.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Kirah Johnson had 13 kills, hit .455, had five blocks, and picked up three aces.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had 13 kills and hit .435.Â
- Eileen Gex had 26 digs.
- Ezgi Basaranlar recorded 39 assists and seven digs.
- Lily Rogers had 11 assists.Â
- Savannah Seemans had 10 kills and recorded 17 digs and five aces.Â
- Lani Mason had nine kills, 11 digs, and three aces.
- Madelyn Grunza had eight kills and four blocks.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- The opening set was a battle with 13 ties and seven lead changes. Delaware went up 5-2, but Charleston rattled off six straight points to take a three-point lead. After Delaware tied it at eight, both squads went back-and-forth with neither scoring more than two straight points until the Blue Hens went on a 3-0 run to go up 19-16.
- Four straight points by Charleston put them up 21-20, helping them claim a two-point win.Â
- Whitfield-Moss and Johnson had four kills each in the set, and Basaranlar had 16 assists.Â
- A 4-0 run gave Charleston a 10-9 lead. Another 4-0 run helped Charleston extend their lead to 20-14.Â
- Delaware cut the lead down to 22-19, but Charleston scored three of the last four points to take the set.Â
- Whitfield-Moss and Johnson added three kills each in the set.Â
- Delaware immediately turned it on in their comeback attempt, going up 7-0 to start the set and 15-4. Mason had three aces and Grunza had two kills during the initial 7-0 run, then Rogers added two aces to help build an 11-point lead.Â
- After Charleston cut the lead to 20-15, Delaware scored five of the final six points of the set to win.Â
- Anna Logan Gillens and Johnson each had three kills in the set.Â
- With Charleston up 4-2 early, Delaware scored six straight to take a four-point lead. Charleston tied the set at 11, and eventually took a 21-20 lead.
- Two kills by Grunza, a kill by Seemans, and a block by Whitfield-Moss helped Delaware score the final five points of the set to force a deciding set.Â
- Mason had three kills in the set.Â
FIFTH SET
- After the score was tied at five, kills by Johnson and Mason and two aces by Seemans helped Delaware pull out to a 9-5 lead.Â
- A kill and an ace by Johnson gave Delaware a 13-7 lead. Whitfield-Moss finished off the match with a kill to complete the comeback, winning the final set 15-10.Â
- Whitfield-Moss had four kills, while Basaranlar and Rogers combined for nine assists.
GAME NOTES
- Johnson's three aces were a career-best. She recorded her fifth game this season with at least five blocks, and her sixth game with double-digit kills and a hitting percentage over .400.Â
- Whitfield-Moss started her first game of her collegiate career. Playing in her third career game, she recorded her first kills and blocks as a college student-athlete.Â
- Gex's 26 digs were a season-best, and were her most since having 28 on Nov. 17, 2022, also against Charleston during the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament.Â
- Basaranlar now has 3,375 assists for her career.Â
- Rogers' 11 assists were a season-best, and the most she's had since having 21 against Hofstra on Oct. 23, 2022.Â
- Seemans recorded her second straight double-double and her fourth of the season. She has recorded at least 15 digs in three of her last four games. Her five aces tied her season-high, also done on August 27 against Robert Morris.Â
- Mason had her fifth consecutive game with at least 10 digs, her second such streak of the season.Â
- Gillens, playing in her sixth career game, recorded a career-best six kills.Â
- Delaware's win was their first in "reverse-sweep" fashion since Nov. 17, 2022, also against Charleston during the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament.Â
