Volleyball Sweeps Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. - University of Delaware volleyball swept Northeastern in three sets (25-22, 25-16, 25-16) on Oct. 7, 2023 to begin their weekend series against the Huskies.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Earning a second consecutive start, Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had a game-high tying nine kills and hit .500.Â
- Kirah Johnson also had nine kills and recorded four blocks.Â
- Madelyn Grunza had seven kills and hit .429.Â
- Ezgi Basaranlar recorded 37 assists, five digs, and three blocks.
- Eileen Gex had a game-high 13 digs.
- Savannah Seemans had eight kills and recorded five digs.Â
- Lani Mason had eight kills, nine digs, and five aces.
- Amelia Painter had eight digs.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- The first set was the most contested of the match, with 10 ties and four lead changes. A 4-0 scoring run for Delaware gave them an 11-7 lead, and they upped their lead to 14-9 after back-to-back kills by Whitfield-Moss.Â
- Northeastern battled back to tie the set at 18-18, but Delaware scored four of the final five points of the set to take it 25-22.Â
- Mason had a set-best four kills, while Basaranlar had 10 assists.Â
- Delaware raced out to a 9-1 lead to begin the second set and upped it to 12-3, which was highlighted by three-straight kills by Seemans that was part of a 6-0 run.Â
- A 3-0 spurt by Northeastern cut Delaware's lead to 17-11, but kills by Seemans and Johnson got Delaware back on track and were able to close out a nine-point set win.Â
- Whitfield-Moss and Johnson had five kills each and Basaranlar had 15 kills.Â
- After the score was tied at five, rattled off seven of the next eight points to take a 12-6 lead. Seemans had two kills and an ace during the stretch, while Mason added two kills and Hannah Wright added an ace.
- Four straight points, punctuated by an ace by Painter, made the score 20-11. Delaware scored the final three points of the set, on kills by Mason, Grunza, and Seemans, to finish off the sweep.Â
GAME NOTES
- In her second straight start and fourth career game, Whitfield-Moss had a career-best .500 hitting percentage. She has 22 kills and a .459 hitting percentage in her last two games.Â
- Basaranlar has recorded at least 35 assists in 12 games this season.Â
- Grunza had a .400 hitting percentage for the third time this season, also done against Tarleton St. (.481 on Sept. 1) and Lamar (.429 on Sept. 2).Â
- Mason's five aces were one shy of her career-high of six done on Sept. 4, 2021 against Maryland-Eastern Shore.Â
