Volleyball Closes Out Perfect October With Victory Over UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. -Â University of Delaware volleyball won their ninth consecutive match in a 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22, 25-18) victory over UNCW to complete an undefeated month of October. Delaware is in sole possession of second place in the CAA standings with four matches to play, including being two matches up on third place Campbell. They trail Towson by one match.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Lani Mason had a game-high tying 14 kills and added four assists and seven digs.
- Savannah Seemans recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.Â
- Ezgi Basaranlar had 40 assists and 13 digs.
- Madelyn Grunza recorded nine kills, hit .286, and three blocks.Â
- Asia Murray had three kills and five blocks.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had four kills and hit .600.Â
- Kirah Johnson recorded six kills.Â
- Eileen Gex had eight digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- The Blue Hens took an 8-3 lead after an ace by Mason, forcing a timeout by UNCW. The Seahawks tied the set up at 10 and scored four straight points to go up 17-13 and eventually 20-14.Â
- Delaware would rally to cut the lead down to 22-20 after an ace by Seemans. Facing a set loss, Delaware scored three straight points, highlighted by an ace by Hannah Wright, to trim the lead to 24-23, but UNCW held on to claim the opening set.Â
- Mason and Seemans each had four kills in the opening set, with Basaranlar recording nine assists.Â
- Another quick start for Delaware put them up 11-3 to begin the third. The closest UNCW would cut into the deficit was 17-14 for the rest of the set.Â
- A kill and an ace by Mason got the Blue Hens going again, and kills by Johnson and Grunza helped Delaware close out the set and even the match.Â
- Johnson had four kills and Basaranlar had 10 assists in the set.Â
- UNCW took a 10-7 lead in the third set and extended it to 14-9. Blocks by Murray and Grunza and a kill by Mason helped Delaware cut the lead to one, but UNCW still maintained a 21-18 lead late.
- Delaware scored seven of the final eight points of the set to come-from-behind and win. Mason, Whitfield-Moss, and Seemans all had kills, with Whitfield-Moss picking up a block as well.Â
- Mason had five kills in the set, while Seemans had four. Basaranlar had nine assists.
- UNCW again took the lead to begin the set at 8-5, but saw Delaware come back to go up 12-9.Â
- UNCW tied the set at 14 and trailed by just 18-17, but the Blue Hens once more closed the set strong, again scoring seven of the final eight points to claim the set and match.Â
- Grunza recorded four kills and Basaranlar had 12 assists in the fourth.
GAME NOTES
- Mason now has 1,426 career kills.Â
- Basaranlar had her eighth game this season with at least 40 assists. She recorded her seventh double-double of the season.
- Basaranlar upped her career assist total to 3,650.Â
- Seemans recorded her sixth double-double of the season.Â
- Murray had her eighth game this season with at least five blocks.Â
- Delaware's nine consecutive wins is their longest since winning nine straight last season, from Sept. 9-Oct. 3. Their nine consecutive wins against CAA opponents is their longest since winning 14 straight from Oct. 3-Nov. 21, 2010.Â
- Delaware went 27-8 in sets in October.Â
