Volleyball Sweeps Elon, Extends Winning Streak To 12

ELON, N.C. -Â University of Delaware volleyball defeated Elon in three sets (25-16, 26-24, 25-22) on Nov. 11, 2023. Delaware secured a top-two seed in the CAA Conference Tournament next week, and extended their win streak to 12.Â

Up Next:Â Delaware plays their regular season finale tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against Elon. With a win and a Towson loss to Northeastern, Delaware will earn a share of the CAA regular season championship, and will be the one seed in next week's CAA Tournament.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Lani Mason had a team-high 12 kills.
- Madelyn Grunza recorded seven kills and hit .467.
- Savannah Seemans recorded seven kills, four blocks, and six digs.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had five kills and four blocks.Â
- Ezgi Basaranlar had 23 assists and five digs.
- Kirah Johnson recorded two kills and four blocks.
- Eileen Gex had eight digs.
- Delaware held Elon to a .084 hitting percentage.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Four straight points by Delaware turned an early deficit into a 9-7 lead, which was extended to 14-11 after a kill by Whitfield-Moss.Â
- Another run, this time 5-0, put Delaware in front 19-13. Delaware scored the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.Â
- Mason and Seemans each had three kills in the first set.Â
- Back-to-back kills by Johnson and Seemans gave Delaware an 11-7 lead. Elon closed the gap though and cut the lead to 15-14.Â
- Delaware created some breathing room, taking a 21-18 lead, but Elon once again rallied and cut the lead to 22-21 before later scoring three straight points to tie the set at 24. Two attack errors in a row by Elon gave Delaware the set and a 2-0 lead.Â
- Mason added four more kills in the set, with Seemans and Whitfield-Moss tallying three. Basaranlar had nine assists.
- Elon went up 7-2 to begin the third set. Mason and Whitfield-Moss jump-started a 4-0 run for Delaware, with both recording a kill each, teaming up for a block assist, and Whitfield-Moss recording a solo block, to cut the Elon lead to one. Both teams exchanged 4-0 runs to bring the score to 11-10, Elon.
- With the Phoenix up 15-13, Delaware scored five in a row, with Johnson and Mason recording kills and Basaranlar and Johnson picking up blocks, to go ahead 18-15. Elon came back to take a 20-19 lead, but two straight kills by Mason and Grunza helped start back up Delaware and gave them a 23-20 lead. Grunza finished the set off with a kill to give Delaware the victory.Â
- Mason had five kills in the final set, while Grunza had four.Â
GAME NOTES
- Mason now has 1,464Â career kills.
- Basaranlar upped her career assist total to 3,739.Â
- Grunza had has recorded at least a .400 hitting percentage in three straight games.
- Delaware's 12Â consecutive wins and 12Â consecutive wins against CAA opponents is their longest since winning a program record 14 straight from Oct. 3-Nov. 21, 2010.Â
- Delaware has won 12 sets in a row. They previously won 14 straight sets from Oct. 1-Oct. 15.Â
- Delaware has held their opponents to under a .100 hitting percentage in back-to-back games for the first time since August 27, 2021 (Temple, .061 and Rider, .076). They've also held their opponents to a hitting percentage under .200 in 11 straight matches.Â
