Women’s Basketball Wraps Up Non-Conference Slate Against Harvard

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware returned to campus after being away for 24 days for a Sunday New Year's Eve matinee in front of the home crowd of 1,174 inside the Bob Carpenter Center. The Blue Hens welcomed Harvard to Newark for the first time in program history but was unable to overcome the largest deficit falling 88-58 to the Crimson. Delaware closes out the non-conference schedule with a 4-8 record while Harvard finishes with a 7-6 mark heading into conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter: Harvard 21, Delaware 13
The Blue Hens will open the new year and CAA play on the road when the squad heads to Boston, Mass. to face Northeastern Friday, Jan. 5 inside Cabot Center. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m and will be broadcasted simultaneously on FloHoops and NESN+.
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Leading the way for the Blue Hens was Klarke Sconiers, who led the team in points with 15 of 7-of-10 shooting and hauled in five rebounds.
- Sconiers was one of three Blue Hens, along with Ande'a Cherisier and Sydney Boone with double figures.
- Cherisier tied her career high 13 points off 4-of-6 shooting with a team high seven rebounds. Boone had 14 points off 7-of-13 shooting.
- Delaware finished the afternoon shooting 38.6 percent (22-57) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-14) from beyond the arc and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free throw line.
- The Blue Hens pulled down 27 rebounds, scoring 11 second-chance points off of nine offensive boards.
- The Blue Hens finished with 14 assists, 30 points in the paint, four fast break points, 13 bench points and scored 13 points off of 17 Crimson miscues.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter: Harvard 21, Delaware 13
- The Blue Hens opened the scoring at the 8:25 mark thanks to a second-chance layup by Sconiers for the early 2-0 lead.
- Harvard responded with an 8-2 spurt to hold the narrow four point lead, 8-4, with 5:42 showing on the clock.
- From 5:27 to 2:04, Sconiers then put the team on her back scoring five of the Blue Hens next nine points to take the brief one point lead, 13-12.
- The Crimson answered back with a 9-0 run to regain the advantage and close out the quarter, 21-13.
- Harvard put its foot on the gas in the second period outscoring the Blue Hens 22-6.
- The Crimson's lead grew to a half-high 24 points courtesy of Elena Rodriguez three-pointer with a 1:04 remaining to send the 43-19 game into the break.
- Rodriguez's put together a first half double-double with 22 points on 8-of-9 shooting and 10 rebounds in 18 minutes of play.
- Things continued to go the Crimson way as the team maintained the double-digit lead.
- Harvard saw its lead grow to 29 points (56-27) after Katie Krupa's triple at the 5:02 mark.
- The Crimson built a 34-point cushion with a pair of freebies with 46 seconds left (66-32), before Cherisier knocked down a free throw to send the 33-point deficit into the final quarter, 66-33.
- Harvard extended its lead to a game-high 35 points on two occasions, once on a trio of Lola Mullaney free throws at the 7:54 mark (73-38) and again by Karlee White's layup at the 6:56 mark (75-40).
- Rebecca Demeke drained one from deep to cut the Blue deficit to 28 points with 4:26 left, 77-49.
- The Crimson closed out the game scoring 11 of the game's final 20 points to settle the 88-58 final.
- This was the first time in 29 years the Blue Hens and the Crimson face one another.
- Today's outcome is the largest deficit this season.
- The Blue Hens woes continues as the team has now lost five-straight games.
