OXFORD, Miss. – Delaware baseball (0-3) was swept at the hands of national champion #4 Ole Miss (3-0) after falling 14-4 on Sunday at Swayze Field.
The Rebels added an early run on a sacrifice fly and never looked back.
A Jacob Gonzalez grand slam in the second inning stretched the score to 5-0 for Ole Miss, the sixth home run the team hit during the weekend. Kemp Alderman added a two-run shot later that inning to make it 7-0.
Tyler Strechay relieved Chris Grome, firing 3.2 innings in his Delaware debut.
Delaware mounted offense in its half of the fifth inning, as Jackson Tyer and Tyler Leach worked walks, which paved the way for an RBI single for Dan Covino, his first hit at Delaware.
After a scoreless inning by Strechay, Delaware had its highest-scoring inning of the young season, scoring three runs thanks to a pair of RBI hits by Leach and Andrew Amato. Amato's double drove in two runs.
Leach had the first multi-hit game for Delaware this season, going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
The Hens are back in action on Tuesday, hosting UMBC at Bob Hannah Stadium for the 2023 home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
