COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of Delaware softball team had a runner on base in all seven innings, but could not come up with a clutch hit as it fell in the weekend finale at the Carolina Classic, 3-0 to George Washington. With the loss, the Blue Hens have now dropped five straight and move to 4-5 on the season.
Kendall Shank finished with a career-high five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits. Katie Scheivert was on base three times with two singles and a walk and stole two bases. Julz Garber singled and walk and also stole two bases.
George Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and one more in the second.
The Blue Hens had plenty of opportunities to cut into the deficit as they put six runners in scoring position over the first five innings, thanks to three base hits, two walks and five stolen bases. However, they could not find the clutch hit to push a run across the plate.
In the seventh, two-out singles by Hanna Garber and Julz Garber brought the tying run to the plate, but a flyout ended the game.
Delaware will return to action next weekend when it travels to North Carolina for the UNCG Invitational. The Blue Hens will take on Indiana, UNCG and UConn on Friday and Saturday before playing in a playoff-format semifinal and championship.
