Women's Lacrosse Battles Temple Hard In Setback

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware's women's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the 2023 season on Wednesday, as Temple came away with a highly-competitive 9-7 win. Danielle Livornese stood out offensively for Delaware, scoring three goals for the third consecutive game, while Delaney McDaniel dished out three assists. Lizzie Yurchak scored two goals and dished out an assist, and Morgan Gore scored a goal for the third straight game. Lizzie Hsu also scored a goal for Delaware. Defensively, Emma Hoffman caused four turnovers and Madison Hranicka caused three, with both players scoring up a pair of ground balls.
Temple scored immediately after the opening draw, but Livornese and Hsu scored in a 50-second span to give the Blue Hens a lead with five minutes to go in the first period. Temple tied the game before the end of the quarter, and took the lead to start the second. Gore tied the game with 5:38 remaining in the first half, and both teams ended the quarter knotted up a three.
Delaware and Temple traded goals in the third quarter, beginning with Yurchak giving the Blue Hens the lead and Livornese scoring with 4:52 remaining to retake the lead. In the final quarter, Temple scored first to take a 6-5 advantage. Yurchak and Livornese found the back of the net in a span of a minute and 13 seconds to give Delaware the lead back with just under 11 minutes left. Temple, however, scored three unanswered goals in the final five minutes to pull out the win.
Livornese now has nine goals on the season after three straight hat tricks to begin the year. She is the first player to score nine goals in the season's first three games since Christine Long in 2019, and the first player to begin the season with three straight three-goal games since Becky Gohsler in 2017, when she began the year with four consecutive. McDaniel now has 11 assists on the season through the first three games, and Hranicka has 10 caused turnovers.
The Blue Hens will next play Old Dominion on Feb. 25 at 12:00 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
