DeLAND, Fla. – Joey Loynd's two-run single with the bases loaded in the top of the tenth gave Delaware baseball (3-4) a lead it would never relinquish, taking the series at Stetson (4-3) by a final score of 8-6.
Stetson scored first off starter Chris Grome, who yielded a solo shot to Jayden Hylton in the second inning. The Blue Hens answered right back in the third, loading the bases for JJ Freeman, who drove in two runs with a single.
Stetson tied the game in the third, and Delaware once again had an answer, loading the bases and bringing across two more runs in the fourth.
The Hatters once again tied it up against reliever Tyler Strechay, but Loynd's first home run of the season made the game 6-4 Delaware, where it would remain until the seventh.
A few defensive miscues in the seventh knotted the game up at six, but Strechay worked out of further trouble, finishing his day with five strong innings, fanning four and allowing just two earned runs.
Delaware loaded the bases in its half of the eighth but was unable to score.
Luke Pizzico relieved Strechay, and after a runner got to third base with nobody out, weaved out of a jam by inducing a double play to force extra innings.
The Blue Hens loaded the bases with no one out in the tenth, and with one out, Loynd drove in a pair of runs with a single to make it 8-6.
Pizzico retired the side in the tenth to seal the Hens' third victory of the season.
Loynd drove in four runs to lead the Blue Hens, stretching his week and season total to 14. Bryce Greenly recorded four hits while Dan Covino and Jake Dunion each swiped three bags.
The Hens will travel to #13 Maryland on Tuesday with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
