Women’s Basketball Dominates Northeastern, 77-66

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's basketball team returned to the First State to play host to Northeastern (10-11, 5-5 CAA) Sunday afternoon inside Bob Carpenter Center. In front of the adoring 1,472 fans, the Blue Hens (12-9, 5-5 CAA) claimed the double-digit 77-67 victory over the Huskies, returning to winning ways.
With the opening scoreboard showing 10-9 in favor of Northeastern, Tara Cousins knocked down a jumper and ignited an 11-2 Blue Hen run that lasted the remaining 4:24 of the quarter to take the 20-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The Huskies turned up the intensity in the second quarter by using a 12-4 run to make it a 24-all game with 6:11 left. Cousins' jumper and Rebecca Demeke's steal leading into a euro step layup helped build the four-point cushion for the Blue Hens, 28-24. Northeastern stayed focused and put together a 6-2 run to tie the game at 30 with 3:13 showing on the second-quarter clock. Michelle Ojo poured in a jumper to give Delaware the brief two-point advantage, 32-30, before the Huskies closed out the quarter on a 7-2 run to take the 37-34 lead into the break.
The seesaw battle commenced throughout the third period where Jaelyn Batts laid in two for the Huskies to tie it at 54 with 2:28 left. Demeke then connected from deep before Ojo scored six-straight points as part of Delaware's 9-0 scoring spurt to earn the 63-54 lead heading into the final quarter. The Blue Hens outscored the Huskies 29-17 and shot an incredible 68 percent (15-22) from the field.
After Northeastern pulled within seven 38 seconds into the fourth quarter (63-56), Delaware watched its lead balloon to a game-high 13 points, 69-56, thanks to Demi Burdick's putback layup kickstarting the 6-0 run with 7:28 remaining. Northeastern was able to trim the deficit to single digits twice before the Blue Hens maintained the double-digit lead in the remaining 1:42 to settle the 77-67 final.
The Bob Carpenter Center fans saw six Blue Hens scoring in double figures headlined by a career-best 14 points (4-7 FG, 5-7 FT) coming off the rookie Nakiyah Mays-Prince's hands. Mays-Prince added seven assists, six rebounds and three steals to her statline. Cousins followed with 14 points (6-10 FG, 1-2 3FG) and three steals while Ojo poured in 13 points (6-11 FG) and pulled down five rebounds off the bench. Burdick added 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and a block in her first-career start in the Blue & Gold. Jewel Smalls (three steals) and Demeke (4-7 FG, 2-3 3FG) poured in 10 points each.
Derin Erdogan (4-9 3FG) and Gemima Motema (8-12 FG) paced Northeastern with 18 points each while Jaelyn Batts swatted away a game-high four shots.
Delaware shot 43.3 percent (29-67) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-17) from beyond the arc, and 76.5 percent (13-17) from the free throw line. Northeastern connected on 39.1 percent (27-69) from the field, 21.1 percent (4-19) from three-point territory, and 75.0 percent (9-12) from the charity stripe. The Blue Hens outplayed the Huskies in steals (10-8), bench points (37-12), and points off turnovers (21-20).

WHAT'S NEXT
Delaware will remain in the First State on Friday, Feb. 10 and will play host to UNCW at 7 p.m. as part of the Black History Month Legacy Game inside Bob Carpenter Center. Fans are encourage to wear black to the game.
