Clutch Plays Lead Women's Lacrosse To A Win Against UMBC In Road Opener
3/1/2023 5:32:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
BALTIMORE, Md. - Clutch plays by Danielle Livornese and Mercy McCarthy helped propel Delaware women's lacrosse to a 7-6 win over UMBC on March 1 in their first road game of the season. Livornese scored the game-winning goal with just over a minute remaining, while McCarthy made a game-saving stop with under 10 seconds to go on a free-position attempt to seal a one-goal win.
"Really proud of how this team came together to gut out a win against a very strong UMBC team," head coach Amy Altig said. Our defensive unit and Mercy were amazing today. A lot of people are continuing to step up all over the field and contributing to our team's success."
Megan Bozzi had a breakout game for Delaware, as the Coastal Carolina transfer scored her first three-career goals as a Blue Hen. Delaware also saw goals scored by Lizzie Yurchak, Jenna McHale, and Morgan Gore, with both Bozzi and Gore recording assists. McCarthy recorded three ground balls and caused a turnover, while McCarthy had 11 saves.Â
Yurchak got the scoring started for the Blue Hens on the game's opening possession. A tightly-defensive battle in the first quarter ended up in the advantage of UMBC, as they led 2-1 after the first 15 minutes.Â
Delaware immediately tied the game to begin the second quarter, as Bozzi found the back of the net for the first time as a Blue Hen. After UMBC retook the lead at the 8:12 mark, Bozzi notched her first assist with Delaware by connecting with Gore to tie the game. UMBC, though, took their biggest lead of the game at 5-3 by scoring two unanswered goals. Bozzi scored her second goal of the quarter to cut the lead to one and give Delaware momentum heading into halftime.Â
More tight defense was the theme in the third quarter, as the only goal was scored by Bozzi, her third, and tied the game up at five heading into the final quarter.
McHale gave Delaware the lead with 7:56 remaining in the fourth quarter. UMBC tied the game back up 70 seconds later. With 1:03 left in the game, Gore found Livornese on a breakaway to give the Blue Hens a lead heading into the final minute. UMBC had a chance to tie the game on a free-position shot with nine seconds left, but McCarthy was able to make the stop to cement the game.Â
Bozzi's hat trick was the ninth of her collegiate career, and first with Delaware. She now has 89 points for her career. Delaware has had a player score at least three goals in a game in every game this season so far as well. Gore continued her streak of scoring a goal in five consecutive games to begin her career. McCarthy became the first Delaware player to allow fewer than 10 goals and save at least 10 shots since Kate Brewster on March 4, 2020 against Duquesne. Delaware has allowed fewer than 10 goals in three consecutive games for the first time since March 23-31, 2019 against UConn, Oregon, and Louisville. This was their first win over UMBC since March 10, 2008.Â
Delaware returns home Saturday to take on Georgetown at 3:00 p.m.
