Women's Lacrosse Defeated By Niagara In Overtime

DENVER, Colo. - Denver women's lacrosse team was defeated by Niagara, 12-11, in overtime on Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Lizzie Hsu tied her career-high goals scored with five, while Riley Gillin scored her first two goals of the season. Keira Grant, Delaney McDaniel, Sydni Rosa, and Jenna McHale all scored goals as well. Grant and Lizzie Yurchak both had two assists. Madison Hranicka had four ground balls and four caused turnovers, and Kellie Ann Matey recorded three ground balls. Sam Schelling and Danielle Livornese both had six draw controls.
The Blue Hens jumped on Niagara early, scoring the game's first eight goals in the opening 17 minutes Hsu's first goal got Delaware's run going, then McDaniel scored on a free position shot. McHale and Rosa both found the back of the net to put the Blue Hens up four. Hsu ended the quarter with a goal on a free position shot and then scored a goal on an assist from Yurchak.
Grant scored a goal to begin the second quarter before assisting on Hsu's fourth to put Delaware up 8-0. Niagara scored their first goal on a free-position shot with 5:04 remaining, but Delaware took an 8-1 lead into halftime.
Niagara scored six goals in the third quarter to cut Delaware's lead to one entering the fourth. The Purple Eagles then tied the game at nine with a goal to begin the fourth quarter. Hsu scored her fifth goal of the day to put Delaware in the lead again at the 11:17 mark, but three straight goals by Niagara gave them an 11-9 advantage with 2:46 left. Gillin scored at the 2:29 and 1:21 marks on assists from Gore and Grant to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Niagara scored at the 4:24 mark in overtime to win.
Hsu's five goals tied her career-high, last done on April 16, 2022 against Elon. Gillin had her fifth career multi-goal game, while Grant's assists were the first two of her career. Hranicka had a season-best and tied her career-high in ground balls with four, also one on March 11, 2022 against Temple, April 9, 2022 against William & Mary, and Feb. 24, 2021 against Delaware State. Her four caused turnovers also tied her career-high, also done against Lehigh on Feb. 10, 2023, April 23, 2022 against James Madison, and March 5, 2021 against Georgetown. Delaware had 20 draw controls in a game for the sixth time in program history, and the second time this season (Feb. 25 against Old Dominion). It's the first time in program history they've had two games of at least 20 draw controls in the same season.
Delaware will play No. 6 nationally ranked Denver on Monday at 1:00 EST.
