Baseball Falls Short in Series Finale Against UMass Lowell

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware baseball (8-11, 2-1 CAA) led late but ultimately fell short of the series sweep of UMass Lowell (3-14), falling 9-6 in Sunday's series finale.
Sunday's game followed the same path as Saturday's game early on as starters Chris Grome and Nick DiRito each tossed three scoreless frames.
The Riverhawks pounced in the fourth inning, chasing across three runs on multiple hits. Delaware answered back by scratching across a run in the bottom half, but another run in the next half inning staked UMass Lowell to a 4-1 lead.
Aidan Kane scampered home on an error after Tyler Leach singled to make it 4-2, and with the bases loaded, Jake Dunion picked an opportune time for his 100th career hit, smacking a double into the left-center gap to clear the bases and put the Hens up 6-4.
Delaware did not maintain its lead as reliever Tyler Strechay allowed runs in three of the final four innings, putting the visitors up 9-6 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
A leadoff single in the ninth by Leach was erased on a lineout double play. Delaware loaded the bases after a pair of hits and a walk, but Andrew Amato flew out to left field to end the rally and seal a 9-6 victory for the visitors.
JJ Freeman recorded three hits in the loss and Dunion's four RBIs paced the squad.
The Hens return to action shortly, taking part in the next iteration of the Route 1 Rivalry and hosting Delaware State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
