Timely Offense and Pitching Leads Baseball to Liberty Bell Classic Victory Over Saint Joseph’s

NEWARK, Del. – Delaware baseball (10-14, 2-4 CAA) bounced back from a tough weekend by breaking out a 9-3 victory over Saint Joseph's (8-12) on Tuesday to head to the semifinals of the Liberty Bell Classic.
"After getting swept, there was a little lost confidence," head coach Greg Mamula said. "Hopefully this win today gets us back moving in the right direction."
The offense showed up early as Andrew Amato drove in a pair with a double in the second to put the Hens in front, a lead the team would never relinquish.
JJ Freeman, who has been heating up lately with the bat and glove, drove his third home run of the season to right field to extend the lead to 4-0.
"I've just been looking for my pitch, and when I get it, trying to get my A swing off," Freeman said. "I was getting some defensive swings earlier in the season, so I've been trying to get better swings, and it has been working out."
Saint Joseph's scratched a run across in the fifth, but Delaware once again answered back as Jake Dunion sent an opposite-field homer to right field off of the scoreboard for his first home run of the season.
The Hawks fought to within three and had the bases loaded in the seventh. Reliever Owen Margolis entered the game and induced a double play and struck out the final batter to end the threat.
After the Blue Hens added three runs, Margolis finished the final two innings, earning his first save of the season, fanning four batters.
"[Owen's] been huge for this team, I'm sure he leads our team in appearances," Mamula said. "He has a rubber arm, he can bounce back and pitch multiple times a week, whether it's for a hitter or three innings like today. There's a lot of versatility with him because he throws strikes."
Dunion paced the Hens with three hits and three RBIs, while Freeman and Amato joined him with multiple hits. Joey Loynd took the NCAA lead with his 15th double of the season.
With Lafayette's win over Penn on Tuesday, Delaware will host the Leopards at Bob Hannah Stadium on April 4.
"I love the LBC, I'm a big Philly sports fan and playing at The Bank [Citizens Bank Park] is awesome," Freeman said. "Good for us to get the win today and move to next week to get another one."
