WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Emily Winburn and Taylor Wroten were absolutely dominant in the circle and Hanna Garber had five total hits on the day as the University of Delaware softball team swept a CAA doubleheader at Monmouth on Friday behind a pair of shutouts. The Blue Hens took the first game 6-0 before breaking out for an 11-0 victory in game two. With the two wins, UD improves to 14-15 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Game One: Delaware 6, Monmouth 0
The Blue Hens used a three-run sixth inning to break things open.

Winburn fired her second shutout of the season to pick up her 40th career victory and CAA-leading ninth of the year. She allowed just four hits while striking out five in her eighth complete-game effort of the season.

Garber went 3-for-3 with two singles and a triple while also reaching via a walk to lead the offense. Katie Scheivert was also on base twice and scored two runs.

The Blue Hens got the scoring started in the top of the second inning as Scheivert led off with a double and went to third on a single by Brittney Mendoza. Mendoza stole second before Kristen Luzon delivered an RBI ground out to score Scheivert. Following a strikeout, Mendoza hustled home on the throw to first, dancing around the catcher's tag to give UD a 2-0 lead.

Garber led off the top of the third with a triple into the right-center field gap and then crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Winburn was cruising as she faced just two over the minimum through three innings with four strikeouts. She ran into trouble in the fourth as Monmouth loaded the bases with one out, but a popup and strikeout ended the threat.

In the sixth, a walk, single and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out. Sydney Shaffer pinch hit and lined a two-run single into right field to score both Schievert and Grace Hrustich, who had singled in her first at-bat in more than a year. Garber lined an RBI single of her own to give UD the 6-0 lead.

Winburn retired six of the final seven batters to seal the win.

Game Two: Delaware 11, Monmouth 0
The offense broke out for a season-high 14 hits and Wroten completed the shutout sweep.

Mendoza had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in five runs. Julz Garber was on base five times with four hits and was on base four times and scored two runs. Hanna Garber and Zoey Valentino were each on base three times with two hits and a walk while Kiara Mills had two hits and four RBI.

Wroten was masterful in the circle, throwing her second shutout of the season and third complete game. She scattered six hits while striking out four.

The Blue Hens wasted no time in the top of the first to get on the board as a double and infield single by Hanna Garber and Julz Garber, respectively, put two runners on base. With two outs, Mendoza doubled over the right fielder's head to give UD the 2-0 lead.

In the third, Delaware loaded the bases with one out, bringing up Mendoza again. She pulled the ball down the left field line to plate all three runs and extend the lead to 5-0.

The score remained the same until the top of the sixth when a Hrustich single, Hanna Garber double and Julz Garber walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Kiara Mills delivered a two-run single, lining the ball right past the pitcher into center field to make it 7-0.

Delaware broke things open in the top of the seventh, scoring four times. Three-straight walks loaded the bases with nobody out before Shaffer drove in a run with a ground out and Hanna Garber plated another with a sacrifice fly. After an infield single, Mills lined a two-run double into the right-center field gap to provide the final 11-0 score.

The two teams will conclude the three-game CAA series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
