Baseball Routs Charleston, Earns First Series Win Over Cougars Since 2017
4/1/2023 4:43:00 PM | Baseball
NEWARK, Del. – Delaware baseball (12-14, 4-4 CAA) had the bats come out and the pitching to back it up as it shut down Charleston (16-10, 7-4) to earn its first series win over the Cougars in five years.
"I'm proud of how this team has been playing lately and how we've grown as a baseball team," head coach Greg Mamula said. "We've attacked, we've come out and thrown strikes on the mound, we've been aggressive at the plate and it has paid off."
It was no easy task facing off against then-CAA ERA leader Trey Pooser, but the Hens made it look that way, hanging 13 runs (10 earned) on the starter. After falling behind in the first, consecutive doubles by Josearmando Diaz and Brett Lesher put the Hens in front in the second.
Charleston added two more runs, but the Blue Hens' offense exploded in the third, scoring eight runs on six hits capped off by Dan Covino's sixth home run of the campaign.
Joey Silan relieved Carter Welch and pitched a near-flawless effort, sealing the victory with six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and fanning seven batters.
"The coaches and I have been talking about staying low in the zone and attacking by throwing my slider hard and letting everything else work itself out," Silan said. "I just went out there and followed the game plan and it worked the way I wanted it to."
Delaware scored seven more runs in the final few innings, passing 15 runs for the sixth time this season.
Delaware's pitching staff has allowed three runs or fewer in four consecutive games.
"We've all settled into our roles and we're all finally deciding that we're not going to be the mediocre team that we were in the beginning [of the season]," Silan said. "The pitching staff took it as our responsibility for losing the games, and now we're showing the CAA that the pitchers can also do it on this team."
The 16-run margin of victory is Delaware's largest in a nine-inning game since it beat Fairfield 22-6 at Hannah Stadium on March 18, 2016. Delaware also beat UMass Lowell 20-2 earlier this season in a seven-inning contest.
Delaware will aim for the sweep on Sunday. First pitch is at noon.
