Ludman’s Walk-Off Single Seals Baseball’s First-Ever Sweep of Charleston

NEWARK, Del. – Pinch hitting with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 13th, Delaware (13-14, 5-4 CAA) infielder Eric Ludman sent the first pitch he saw from Charleston (16-11, 7-5) reliever Aidan Hunter to right field to seal a 4-3 victory and a sweep of the Cougars.
"Our focus has been on getting better and growing as a baseball team and I think you're seeing the signs of that," head coach Greg Mamula said. "We've got a lot of guys who are pitching better and playing really good baseball and growing as a baseball team."
Andrew Amato got the scoring started for Delaware in the second inning, driving his first of five hits on the afternoon to right and putting Delaware up 1-0. Brett Lesher followed by driving in a run on a suicide squeeze. Amato's 5-for-5 effort was a career-high in hits.
"The biggest thing for me today was trying to keep it simple," Amato said. "Lately, it's been on and off at the plate, and that's baseball, but today, I just tried to keep it simple and put the barrel to the baseball."
The Hens tacked on another run, as Josearmando Diaz, who went 2-for-2 in two at-bats, drove in Joey Loynd with a double.
Charleston fought back, but Tyler Strechay limited the damage to just two runs until the ninth inning, where a roped single by starting pitcher Cole Mathis knotted the game at three.
Delaware mounted several scoring chances in extra innings, but William Privette of Charleston kept the team off the board.
Owen Margolis effectively shut down the Cougars in his three innings, fanning five batters.
Delaware loaded the bases in the 13th after a hit by pitch, an Amato single and Dan Covino walk. Eric Ludman pinch hit for Jackson Tyer and deposited the first pitch he faced to the warning track to notch Delaware's first-ever sweep of Charleston.
"I was just trying to see the ball up and attack early," Ludman said. "He was throwing some good curveballs in the zone, and I was just trying to hit it hard somewhere."
Amato, Diaz and Bryce Greenly each recorded multiple hits while Nate Rolka fired four scoreless innings, striking out a career-best four batters.
Delaware returns home on Tuesday for the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic, hosting Lafayette with a chance to head to Citizens Bank Park on the line.
