STONY BROOK, N.Y. – No. 15/16/17 Delaware men's lacrosse has punched its ticket to the 2023 Colonial Athletic Association tournament with a 12-9 win over Stony Brook on Saturday.
With the win, the Blue Hens improve their record to 9-3 overall, and 5-0 in the CAA. Stony Brook falls to 6-6 overall, and 3-2 in conference play. The Seawolves have lost back-to-back conference games after starting the season 3-0.
With a win against Drexel next Saturday at Delaware Stadium, the Blue Hens will clinch at least a share of the CAA Regular Season title, and will host the CAA Tournament from May 4-6.
Neither team was able to score through the first 10 minutes of the contest. With 4 and a half minutes to play in the quarter, Mike Robinson broke the scoreless tie with his 14th goal of the season. Stony Brook would, however, tie the game 30 seconds later.
With the score tied at 1-1, Tye Kurtz's first goal of the game would break the program record for consecutive games with at least a point, and the conference record for most goals in a career at 165. He's now scored a point in 58 straight games, breaking the record that was set by Curtis Dickson back in 2010. The 58-game streak is the second longest in the country.
After trading goals back and forth for the majority of the second quarter, the Blue Hens ended the half with a Robinson goal with 15 seconds left. It would be his third goal of the half. The Blue Hens used this momentum, and started the third quarter with three unanswered goals scored by Nick Jessen, Owen Grant, and Kurtz. In the fourth quarter, Reed Kurtz scored his second goal of the season, with the assist going to Tye Kurtz, the first time the two bothers have connected on a goal this season.
Following the Kurtz-to-Kurtz goal, the Seawolves went on a 4-0 run from the nine-minute mark of the fourth quarter to the five-minute mark. Despite the run, the Blue Hens prevailed as Jason Kolar scored his third goal of the day to end any momentum the Seawolves had.
Both teams had 43 shots on the day, however, the Blue Hens held a 27-19 shots-on-goal advantage. They had just 10 offensive turnovers while causing 11. In addition, the Blue Hens were 100 percent on clear attempts for the second game in a row.
Individually, the Blue Hens had four players contribute three points: JP Ward off three assists, Tye Kurtz off two goals and one assist, and Mike Robinson and Jason Kolar off three goals. For Kolar, it was his first career hat trick. Defensively, the Blue Hens had three players cause three turnovers: Tate Wasson, Kevin Lynch, and Grant. In net, Matt Kilkeary picked up the decision with 10 saves, and allowed nine goals. He boasts a record of 9-3 this season.
