PHILADELPHIA – The University of Delaware softball team put itself back in the win column on Sunday with a 1-0 shutout victory over Drexel in a CAA contest. With the win, their seventh shutout in the last 14 games, the Blue Hens improve to 22-16 overall and 12-3 in conference play.
Emily Winburn was excellent in the circle once again, firing her fifth complete-game shutout of the season, all coming in her last eight starts. She allowed just two hits while striking out three.
Four different Blue Hens had hits, including pinch-hit singles by Kristin Luzon and Sydney Shaffer.
After only registering two singles through the first four innings, Delaware finally broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth inning. Luzon led off with a pinch-hit single before being replaced by Grace Rudolph on the bases. A sacrifice bunt moved Rudolph up to second base before she came around to score when Hanna Garber reached on a throwing error to provide the only run of the game.
Winburm, who had to work around a couple of errors in the early innings, was on cruise control as she retired the final 10 Drexel batters of the game to seal the win and the series victory.
The Blue Hens will return home for four-consecutive games at Delaware Softball Stadium. The squad will step out of conference play on Wednesday with a midweek matchup against Coppin State. Originally scheduled for a doubleheader, the two teams will now play a single game starting at 4 p.m.
