NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team won its fifth-straight game at home with an 8-4 win over Coppin State on Wednesday afternoon at Delaware Softball Stadium. With the win, the Blue Hens have won 11-of-12 overall and improved to 23-16 overall.
Hanna Garber and Katie Scheivert each had two hits to lead the offense while Scheivert had two RBI and two runs scored and Garber also scored two runs. Brittney Mendoza also added two RBI.
Taylor Wroten started in the circle and went 5.0 innings for her fifth win of the season. She allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out five. Graceyn Frost picked up the save with 2.0 innings of relief, allowing two runs with one strikeout.
After Coppin State quickly jumped on the board with two runs on four hits in the top of the first, the Blue Hens responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half. Singles and aggressive base running by Garber and Kiara Mills put two runners in scoring position before Mendoza lined a two-run single into right field to know the score.
Things remained even until the bottom of the fourth when Delaware took advantage of some sloppy defense to score a pair of runs. With one out, Chloe Blantz lined a single that skipped under the right fielder's glove to allow her to get all the way to third. Scheivert drove her in with a single to give UD the lead. She then stole second and went to third on a soft ground out before scoring when the back-pick attempt was wild to make it a 4-2 game.
Wroten settled down after the shaky first inning, allowing just one base runner over her final four innings.
Delaware broke it open with four runs in the sixth inning. A walk, single and two stolen bases put two runners in scoring position before Scheivert delivered another RBI single. Kate Hondru pinch hit and drove a sacrifice fly into deep left field to score Erica Paisley to make it a four-run game. Consecutive RBI triples off the right-field fence by Hanna Garber and Julz Garber extended the lead to 8-2.
Coppin State scored a pair in the top of the seventh, but Frost sealed the win with a strikeout.
The Blue Hens will remain at home this weekend as they host Towson in a three-game CAA series at Delaware Softball Stadium.
