RICHMOND, Va. - Madison Hranicka of Delaware's women's lacrosse team was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week after her historic game against Drexel, as announced by the conference on Monday, April 17.
Hranicka tied a Delaware single-game program record with seven caused turnovers and scooped up six ground balls. Her seven caused turnovers were tied for the most in a game by a CAA player this year, and the most in a CAA game this year. She is also one of five players this season with at least seven caused turnovers and six ground balls in a game, and the only CAA player. Hranicka is the only CAA player this season with two Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Delaware has earned Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after Riley Gillin received it last week. Delaware has earned three Defensive Player of the Week honors so far this season, most in the CAA. This is the first time Delaware had back-to-back Player of the Week honors since Kate Brewster and Chantae Simms on March 25 and April 1, 2019, and Hranicka is the first Delaware player to earn two CAA Player of the Weeks since Kate Brewster in 2019.
Hranicka currently is fourth nationally and first in the CAA in caused turnovers with 37, and is one of eight players in the country with at least 35 caused turnovers and 30 ground balls. She is third in the conference in ground balls with 32. Her 37 caused turnovers are two shy of tying Simms' (2019) and Erin Wein's (2016) single-season program record of 39. Hranicka is also the eighth player in program history with at least 30 caused turnovers and 30 ground balls in a season, joining Christy Buck (2000), Liz Walton (2000), Ashley Moderacki (2001), Laurie Tortorelli (2002), Erin Wein (2014, 2015), Caitlin McCartney (2015), Becky Gohsler (2018), and Simms (2018, 2019). She's also the first player to have two games of at least six ground balls in one season since Taylor Carpentier in 2018.
Delaware and Hranicka will play their road finale on Saturday at noon against Elon.
