NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware softball team split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon against Towson to open a key CAA weekend series at Delaware Softball Stadium. The Tigers took the first game, 9-0 in five innings, before the Blue Hens bounced back for a 2-0 victory in the nightcap. With the split, UD sits at 24-17 overall and 13-4 in CAA play.

Game One: Towson 9, Delaware 0 (5 innings)
Brittney Mendoza had two hits to lead the Blue Hens.

Towson jumped out to a quick lead as the first six batters of the game all scored, capped by a grand slam. The Tigers added three runs in the top of the fourth to enact the run rule.

Game Two: Delaware 2, Towson 0
Emily Winburn bounced back in a big way as she fired her sixth shutout of the season with six strikeouts while only allowing five hits.

Kiara Mills and Chloe Blantz each had two hits to pace an 11-hit attack that saw nine different Blue Hens register a base knock

Delaware opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Three-straight singles loaded the bases with one out before Zoey Valentino hit a hard grounder that went off the third baseman's glove for an RBI single as Sydney Shaffer crossed the plate to give UD a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Winburn was dealing. She enjoyed a 1-2-3 first inning before stranding runners in scoring position over four of the next five innings.

Three-consecutive singles with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning doubled the lead to 2-0 as Sydney Shaffer drove in Mills with a single into center field.

Winburn slammed the door with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the win and the doubleheader split.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series on Saturday. First pitch at Delaware Softball Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
