Amato’s Big Night, Solid Pitching Earn Baseball Pivotal Win at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Delaware baseball (21-21, 10-9 CAA) entered an important road conference series needing a win against William & Mary (25-18, 9-10) and did just that, topping the Tribe 6-3.
"We needed this win," head coach Greg Mamula said. "Obviously, we have not played great over the last two weeks, and with us being tied with William & Mary, it was a good way for us to start the series, and hopefully lets us be ourselves and come out relaxed tomorrow."
Bryce Greenly worked out of trouble in the bottom of the first, weaving out of a bases-loaded jam.
The Blue Hens took advantage, scoring three runs on four hits in the second. A leadoff double by JJ Freeman was chased home by a Jake Dunion single, and after a walk, Tyler Leach and Andrew Amato chipped in consecutive RBI singles to make it a 3-0 game.
Amato was not done with the RBI single, clocking a 107 mph two-run home run to right field to extend the lead to five, part of a three-hit, three-RBI evening.
"Our approach has been about trying to get our swings off," Amato said. "We've been a little too patient lately, but Coach Mams gave us a good approach to stick to today, and I just followed through."
The Tribe scratched two runs across in the fifth but nothing more.
Joey Loynd brought the lead back to four with an RBI single in the seventh, and Eli Atiya allowed just an unearned run over the next four innings, sealing a 6-3 victory and earning his third save of the season.
Delaware entered the game tied in the standings with the Tribe and moved a game up on fifth place with the win.
Amato, Loynd and Josearmando Diaz each recorded multiple hits, and Amato and Diaz were on base three times.
Delaware will play two more important games against the Tribe.
