McFolling-Young Shines as Track & Field Competes at Temple Owls Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Set to keep the momentum trending upward, the University of Delaware track & field team returned to action on Friday (Apr. 7) and headed to the city of Brotherly Love to compete at Temple Owls Invitational, hosted by Temple University from Temple Sports Complex . The Blue Hens posted 18 personal-best times/marks headlined by Myrissa McFolling-Young's shiny new school record in the shot put.
Temple put together its first-ever all female meet of its kind and hosted the Blue Hens, Loyola (Md.), St. John's and Towson, and that didn't phase McFolling-Young. In her first attempt, the Smyrna, Del. native launched the shot put for her new school- and personal-best mark of 14.94m to win the event. Behind her was Kosie Nkwonta who threw her second attempt for a mark of 13.69m, good enough to capture fifth place.
Cierra Crane also captured victory in the pole vault after leaping over the 3.81m bar, setting a new personal-best mark and climbed up two spots to sit tied for third in the program record books. Also competing the pole vault was Bridget Joyce (3.66m, third place), Meredith Krieger (3.36m, seventh place), Sarah Megivern (3.21m, eighth place) and the rookies setting new PRs in Bridget O'Mara (PR-3.06m, ninth place) and Sarah Hershberger (PR-3.06m, ninth place).
Madison Shaffery was the lone Blue Hen headlining the high jump where she set a PR mark of 1.52m to finish in seventh place. Rounding out the field events was Jahnia Hodge in the triple jump, leaping for a mark of 11.27m to finish in second place.
On the track, Hannah Smalley led the way for the Blue Hens in the 800m where she ran a personal-best time of 2:18.77, crossing the finish line in third place. Amber Cray ran a personal-best time of 13.46 (17th place) in the 100m while Ava Scheibe ran a PR time of 1:04.90 (14th place) in the 400m.
The 1500m race was a special one starring Nicole Schiender finishing first in her heat with a personal-best time of 4:52.57 (ninth overall). Also competing in the 1500m was Marissa Dailey (PR-4.47.08, sixth place), Tiffany Herrera (PR-4:47.99, seventh place), Lindsey Volkman (PR-4:48.26, eighth place), Jessica Straton (5:05.23-17th place).
Danielle Eshelman turned on the jets in the 3000m and finished in second place with a PR time of 10:20.84. Behind her was Katie Hally (10:39.81, fourth place), Anna Cleary (PR-10:48.40, sixth place), Stephanie Herrera (10:50.48, seventh place), Kate Tathman (11:17.21, ninth place) and Alicia Lenoir (11:59.02, 12th place)
Jayde McDermid ran personal best times of 15.58 (fourth place) and 1:11.19 (sixth place) in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles, respectively. Makiyah Cannon-Price captured a seventh place finish in the 400m hurdles with a PB time of 1:12.34.
The 4x400 relay team of Scheibe, McDermid, Jenna Scandale and Melady Brown crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 4:16.31.
