Baseball Mounts Huge Rally Late Thanks to Bench, Earns Win Over UMBC in Extra Innings

"I didn't see that coming, the way the game was going early on," head coach Greg Mamula said. "It felt like a low-scoring game, and then it became a high-scoring game. Kevin Williams hasn't pitched in a long while, and for him to give us that outing, it was big time."
It was a pitcher's duel through three, as Chris Grome fanned four before running into trouble in the fourth. The Retrievers scored three runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
Joey Loynd had both of Delaware's hits in the early going, slamming his 13th home run of the season in the fifth to make it 3-2.
The Hens were held off the board as the home team began to pull away, tacking on five more runs in the sixth and seventh to lead 8-2.
Delaware made a miraculous comeback with two outs in the eighth. Eric Ludman and Jackson Tyer, the latter of whom entered alongside two others off the bench in the inning, drew bases-loaded walks before Jake Dunion dumped a two-run single into the outfield to make it 8-6.
Stepping up with runners on first and third, Owen Petrich topped a game-tying two-run double down the line and the game was all square at eight.
Wyatt Nelson recorded the first two outs of the eighth but had to exit due to an injury, paving the way for Kevin Williams, who allowed a hit into right field but was saved by a dart by Brett Lesher to catch the runner at home.
With the Blue Hens down quietly in the ninth, UMBC had runners on second and third with one out, but Williams stranded them both, striking out back-to-back batters and emphatically celebrating.
In the tenth, it was once again Petrich who came through. Loynd hit his second double of the game but was thrown out at third on a sacrifice attempt by Tyer. With Ludman on second and Tyer on first, Petrich rocketed a single up the middle to give Delaware its first lead of the day.
"I was just trying to get my swings off at anything I could see in the zone," Petrich said. "Everyone was putting together tough at-bats and getting on base, so that helped a lot for us."
Williams got a quick out before running into trouble but induced a game-ending double play to earn his first collegiate win, and more importantly, a wild 9-8 victory for the visitors.
"My slider was working really well today," Williams said. "It's how I got the big strikeouts to end the ninth and a couple of groundouts later."
Loynd went 3-for-4 with three extra-base hits, while Petrich also had a multi-hit effort, driving in three runs.
The team will travel to Monmouth for the final series of its season on Thursday, hoping to clinch a berth in the CAA Tournament.
