JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – And she's off to Austin, Texas, again! Megan Albamonti headlined day two of the NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships First Rounds, hosted by University of North Florida for the University of Delaware track & field team on Thursday, May 25 from Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Chioma Njoku, Halima Scott and Marie-Frederique Poulin put together a strong showing as they all made their postseason debut on Thursday.
Albamonti, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) three-peat champion in the javelin was ready to put her second-seeded throw of 55.33m to the test. The Westerly, R.I. native launched her first attempt for 53.04m (third place), which proved more than enough meters to advance to nationals. Albamonti is the first Blue Hen javelin thrower in program history to punch her ticket to next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Njoku got things started Thursday morning for the Blue Hens day as the Newark, Del. native competed in the hammer throw. Njoku saw her third attempt fly through the air for 57.14m to finish in 32nd place, concluding her career in the Blue & Gold uniform.
Scott, the CAA's silver medal winner in the 400m was ready to open the nightcap for the Blue Hens. The Camden, N.J. native clocked a time of 53.84 to finish in fifth place in the opening heat, 30th place overall, closing out her outdoor campaign.
Poulin closed out the Blue Hens' day racing in the 400m hurdles. The Trois-Rivières, QC Canada native ran a time of 59.15 (30th place) as her career in the Blue & Gold uniform came to a close.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Myrissa McFolling-Young will be the lone Blue Hen competing on Saturday, May 25, in the discus throw with hopes of joining Albamonti in Austin next month. The discus throw event is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
