Top Seed Men's Lacrosse Overcomes First Quarter Deficit to Defeat Towson in CAA Semifinals

NEWARK, Del. – Top seeded men's lacrosse overcomes its largest deficit of the season, and defeats four seed Towson 11-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at Delaware Stadium on Thursday, May 4.
With the win, the Blue Hens improve their record to 11-4 overall. The Tigers finish the season with a 6-9 overall record. Delaware will play No. 3 Stony Brook in the CAA Tournament Championship on Saturday, May 6 at 3:30 p.m.
The Tigers got out to an early 3-0 lead through the first four and a half minutes of the first quarter. The Blue Hens responded to the early Tigers lead with multiple JP Ward goals at the seven minute and one-minute marks of the quarter.
After the Tigers extended their lead to 4-2 early in the second quarter, the Blue Hens finished on a 4-1 run to take a 6-5 lead into the half. The run was started by Jason Kolar, closing the Tigers lead with just over six minutes left in the half. Ward, Cam Acchione, and Owen Grant added goals during the run as well.
Logan Premtaj gave the Blue Hens an immediate spark to start the second half with his first career goal six seconds to start the second half. Nick Jessen added a goal at the 10:20 mark of the third quarter to extend the Blue Hens lead.
Following back-to-back Towson goals, Delaware scored two straight goals of their own to end the third quarter. The goals were scored by Tye Kurtz, at the 2:20 mark, and Mike Robinson, with 20 seconds to go.
The Tigers opened the fourth quarter with a goal to cut the Blue Hens lead to 10-8. However, Delaware was able to hold off any threat from the Tigers with strong defense, and an insurance goal by Robinson.
The Blue Hens out-shot the Tigers 40-38, while both teams had 18 shots-on-goal. Defensively, the Blue Hens caused eight turnovers.
On offense, the Blue Hens were led by Ward, who scored three goals. Ward was one of seven Blue Hens to score a goal. Him and Robinson were the two Blue Hens with a multi-goal game.
Defensively, Tate Wasson had a career-high four of the Blue Hens eight caused turnovers. It's the third time in his career Wasson has caused three or more turnovers. Matt Kilkeary had 10 saves on the day and was credited with the decision. He is now boasts an 11-4 record in net.
