Men's Lacrosse Wins Its Second Straight CAA Tournament Championship

NEWARK, Del. – Top seeded Delaware men's lacrosse wins its second straight Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Championship by defeating No. 3 seed Stony Brook 13-10 on Saturday, May 6 at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware wins its fifth CAA Tournament title of all time, and is the first time Delaware has won back-to-back tournament championships since 2010-2011.
With the win, the Blue Hens improve their record to 12-4 overall, the Seawolves season ends with a 9-7 overall record.
Goalkeeper Matt Kilkeary was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. JP Ward, Tye Kurtz, and Joe Speers were each named the CAA All-Tournament team.
Delaware will await its fate as the NCAA men's lacrosse selection show takes place tomorrow at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
The Blue Hens got out to a fast start, scoring five of the games first seven goals.
JP Ward got the run started with the first goal of the game four minutes into the first quarter. Jason Kolar, Cam Acchione, and Tye Kurtz added goals during the run from the 9:55 mark to the 5:42 mark in the first quarter. Ward finished the run with his second goal of the quarter.
The goal scored by Kurtz was a man-up goal, and broke the men's lacrosse program record for most man-up goals in a career with 19. He passes Curtis Dickson, who originally held the record.
After the Seawolves scored three of the games next four goals to cut the Blue Hens lead to 6-5, the Blue Hens went on a 6-1 run to take a 12-6 lead midway through the fourth quarter. The run was started by Jason Kolar, scoring his second goal of the game with four minutes to go in the second quarter. Acchione, Mike Robinson, and Nick Jessen scored goals in the third quarter. Ward and Robinson capped the run with goals in the fourth quarter.
The Seawolves finished the game on a 4-1 run, but the Blue Hens lead was too large to overcome.
On the day, the Blue Hens out-shot the Seawolves 44-41, including a 27-24 shots-on-goal advantage. The Blue Hens caused 11 turnovers, while only committing just nine.
On offense, the Blue Hens were led by Ward, who had six points off four goals and two assists. Kurtz, Robinson, Kolar, and Acchione each had multi-goal games.
On defense, Tate Wasson led the way with three caused turnovers. He caused seven turnovers throughout the CAA Tournament. Kilkeary, Speers, and Kevin Lynch caused two turnovers each. Kilkeary was credited with the decision with 14 saves, and boast a .583 save percentage. He's now 12-4 overall in net.
