WILLIAMSBERG, Va. – Looking to hoist its third Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship in program history, the University of Delaware track & field team is prepared to compete in the 2023 CAA Outdoor Championships May 5-6 from Walter J. Zable Stadium at Cary Field in Williamsburg, Va., hosted by William & Mary.
First-year head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele will take 29 Blue Hen athletes down to Virginia with the momentum trending upward after concluding the regular season in such a dominant fashion at the Delaware Invitational (Apr. 28) and the memory of being the runner-up at last year's championship.
The Blue Hens have seen stellar performances from Megan Albamonti, Chioma Njoku, Myrissa McFolling-Young and Marie-Frederique Poulin, all who have broken the school record multiple times or rewrote the history books during the outdoor season.
Albamonti, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Most Outstanding Field Athlete and two-time CAA Field Athlete of the week, will headline the javelin throw for the Blue & Gold. Last season at the championship, Albamonti set the new meet record of 55.78m and this season has thrown a season-best mark of 55.33m at Raleigh Relays (Mar. 23-25), a mark that currently sits 13th in the nation.
Right behind Albamonti is Njoku, who carried her dominating performance during the indoor season into her outdoor campaign. Njoku will lead the way for the Blue Hens in the hammer throw after tossing a program record on two different occasions, first at Raleigh Relays (58.38m) and again in front of the home crowd at the Delaware Invitational (59.45m). Njoku's mark of 59.45m currently sits third in the conference.
Last time McFolling-Young saw outdoor champs action was during the 2021 season where she captured bronze medals in the discus throw (47.98m). Planning to lead the charge in both the discus and shot put, McFolling-Young set personal best marks throwing the discus 53.74m, which sits 46th in the nation, and her shot put mark of 15.23m sits atop UD's record books.
Raleigh Relays was also good to Poulin as she ran a personal-best time of 59.08 in the 400m hurdles, which updated her school-record mark. Headlining the 400m will be Halima Scott, who posted a season-best time of 54.01 at the Larry Ellis Invitational (Apr. 14-15) that sits second in the conference and third in school history.
Distance runner Sarah Daniels will look to put together a strong outing in the 3000m steeplechase after posting a personal-best time of 10:39.48 at the Larry Ellis Invitational, a time that sits third in school history and sixth among the conference leaders. Cierra Crane (PR 3.81m) and Bridget Joyce (3.68m), both pole vault vets, will enter the championship with scoring marks that sit fourth and seventh in the conference.
Sitting in scoring position (seventh and eighth, respectively) are the 4x400m relay team (Scott, Poulin, Taylor Johnson, Carly Schmidt) and the 4x100 relay team (Kamylin Padgham, Taylor Johnson, Shylehn Ebuenga-Smith and Scott), with both squads setting season best-times times (3:50.55 at Texas Relays (Mar. 29-Apr. 1)/46.53 at Delaware Invitational (Apr. 28). Kosie Nkwonta (shot put, 14.03m) will look to put the Blue Hens in scoring position after sitting eighth overall in the CAA.
The quest to be crowned the CAA outdoor champ begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday with the women's hammer throw. Additionally, field event champions will be crowned in men's hammer (12 p.m.), women's pole vault (12:30 p.m.), men's long jump (1 p.m.), men's javelin (1:30 p.m.), women's javelin (3:45 p.m.), women's long jump (4 p.m.), men's pole vault (5 p.m.) and men's discus (5:45 p.m.) Running prelims start at 1 p.m. and will continue throughout the evening with four finals coming in the 3000m steeplechase (5:45 p.m.) and 10,000m (7 p.m.) for both the men and women.
