NEWARK, Del. – Emily Winburn fired her first career no-hitter in game one and the University of Delaware softball team swept a doubleheader against Hampton on Friday to open a CAA series. With the two wins, coupled with a UNCW loss, the Blue Hens clinched the 2023 CAA Regular Season Championship for the second-straight season. The Blue & Gold now sit at 28-18 on the season and 17-5 in conference play.
Game One: Delaware 5, Hampton 0
Winburn fired her first career no-hitter, and the 17th in Delaware history. The senior went the distance for the 14th time this season and threw her seventh shutout in CAA play as she only allowed four base runners on an error and three walks while striking out five.
Chloe Blantz had two triples and two RBI while Katie Scheivert had a pair of hits while driving in a run. Sydney Shaffer was on base twice.
The Blue Hens opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Scheivert singled with one out and came all the way around to score when Blantz lined a triple over the left fielder's head. Jayla Brooks drove in Blantz with a sacrifice fly to give UD a 2-0 lead.
The Blue & Gold doubled its lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Hanna Garber led off with a triple and, two outs later, came home on an RBI single by Brittney Mendoza. Shaffer followed with a single before Scheivert made it a 4-0 game with an RBI single that chased home Mendoza.
In the fifth, Shaffer walked with one out and was replaced by Erica Paisley as a pinch-runner. Blantz drove her in from first with her second triple of the game in the left-center field gap to make it 5-0.
Winburn was on cruise control as she allowed just one runner to reach second base the entire game. She retired seven of the final eight batters to etch her name into UD's record books.
Game Two: Delaware 5, Hampton 0
Taylor Wroten put up a strong encore in game two, limiting Hampton to just two hits while striking out five in her seventh complete game and third shutout of the year.
Scheivert and Mendoza each had two hits and two runs scored to lead the offense while Hanna Garber also had two hits.
In the bottom of the second inning, consecutive hits by Mendoza and Scheivert put two runners in scoring position before Blantz drove in her third run of the day with an RBI groundout.
Consecutive one-out singles by Hanna Garber and Julz Garber put two runners on. Mendoza delivered a two-out RBI single into left field to double the lead to 2-0. Doubles by Scheivert and Kristen Luzon made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
Mendoza led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk before the Blue Hens came up with three pinch-hit singles. Kate Hondru lined a single into right field to move Mendoza to second and Zoey Valentino drove her in with a single up the middle. A single by Shaffer loaded the bases before Grace Rudolph capped the scoring with an RBI ground out.
Wroten was in the zone in the circle as she retired the final 17 Hampton batters of the game to preserve the second shutout of the game.
Delaware will conclude the regular season on Saturday when the two teams wrap up its three-game series at 1 p.m. The Blue Hens will recognize the program's six seniors prior to the game in a Senior Day ceremony.
