RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Delaware track & field senior thrower Megan Albamonti was named the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Field Athlete of the Year, announced Wednesday morning by league officials. Along with taking top athlete honors, the Westerly, R.I. native earned All-CAA honors as well as her classmates Myrissa McFolling-Young, Halima Scott, Bridget Joyce and Marie-Frederique Poulin after medaling at the 2023 CAA Outdoor Championships (May 5-6).
Albamonti is the Blue Hens' first CAA Field Athlete of the Year, the second top honoree since Victoria Caruso took home the Rookie of the Year honors in 2010, and she has exceeded expectations in her final year in the Blue & Gold uniform. Albamonti put together a strong outdoor season where she threw over 50 meters in all eight competitions and captured four victories. Her season highlights include her throwing a season-best mark of 55.33m at Raleigh Relays (Mar. 23-25), breaking the Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium record (50.55m) at the Delaware Invitational (Apr. 28) and capturing her third consecutive gold medal at the 2023 CAA Outdoor Championships (May 5-6).
Albamonti's mark at Raleigh Relays proved good enough for her to qualify for her third-straight NCAA East Preliminary Round. As she continued to solidify her name in Delaware history, Albamonti launched her first attempt for 53.04m (third place finish) at regionals to become the first Blue Hen javelin thrower in program history to punch her ticket to nationals. Albamonti closed out the year by finishing in ninth place and collected Second Team All-America honors thanks to launching her implement through the air for 54.46m in her National Championship debut.
At the 2023 CAA Outdoor Championships, the Blue Hens brought home five medals – two gold, one silver and two bronze. McFolling-Young led the way in the discus throw and solidified her gold medal after throwing for a new facility record of 53.32m. The Smyrna, Del. native made her second-career appearance in the East Regional and her final throw sailed through the air for 50.69m (19th place overall). McFolling-Young saw a major improvement from four years ago when she threw 6.39 meters farther than her 2019 throw of 44.30m (43rd place) to conclude her stellar career in the Blue & Gold uniform. She captured four wins (two discus, two shot put) over eight meets.
Scott was all set to defend her 400m title where she was tasked to face Most Outstanding Track Performer in Jada Griffin (NCAT). Scott captured silver in the most dominant fashion possible; by setting a new school record of 53.01 to demolish volunteer coach and alum Tyra Reid's 2016 time of 53.79 right in front of her. The Camden, N.J. native made her first-ever appearance in the NCAA First Rounds where she clocked a time of 53.84 to finish in fifth place in the opening heat, 30th place overall, closing out her outdoor campaign with two wins on the season.
Joyce took her indoor champs performance and brought it to outdoor champs as she leaped over a personal-best 3.80m bar and captured bronze for the Blue Hens. Joyce's mark is tied for fourth in the school's record books.
Poulin followed in the 400m hurdles where she captured bronze by breaking her school record time of 59.08 with the new shiny time of 58.83. The Trois-Rivières, QC Canada native, also made her NCAA First Rounds debut and ran a time of 59.15 (30th place) as her career in the Blue & Gold uniform came to a close. She tallied two wins this season.
The CAA also recognized three programs with major award winners in a reveal of the Women's Track and Field postseason honors as voted by the league's head coaches.
