NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball lost to Villanova in three sets (19-25, 19-25, 16-25) on Sept. 8, 2023 at Bob Carpenter Center.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Kirah Johnson had seven kills, hit .462, and had two blocks.
Lani Mason had a team-high 11 kills.
Savannah Seemans had eight kills, 10 digs, and three blocks.
Madelyn Grunza had eight kills.
Ezgi Basaranlar had 27 assists and nine digs.
Eileen Gex had eight digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

Two kills by Mason, an ace by Basaranlar, a kill by Grunza. and a block by Grunza and Asia Murray got the Blue Hens off to a quick 5-0 start, and they maintained a 12-7 lead midway through the set.
With the score 14-10, Villanova went on a 12-1 run to take a 22-15 lead. Delaware scored four of the next five points but Villanova held on for the set victory.
Mason had five kills while Basaranlar had eight assists and seven digs in the first set.

SECOND SET

Set two was a back-and-forth affair that saw nine ties and five lead changes.
A 4-0 burst by Delaware gave them a 14-10 lead, but the Wildcats scored seven straight points to take a 18-15 lead to take control and take set two.
Mason had five more kills while Basaranlar had nine assists in the set.

THIRD SET

The third set featured seven more ties and three lead changes, with a 3-0 spurt by the Blue Hens giving them a 7-6 lead after a Seemans kill.
Six consecutive points gave Villanova a 19-11 lead late in the set, and allowed them to take the match.
Grunza had four kills in the set, while Basaranlar had 10 assists.
