Women's Basketball Set to Tipoff 2024-25 Season at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Delaware women's basketball is back and it is set to open its 53rd season on the road against George Washington Monday evening inside the Charles E. Smith Center. This will mark the sixth all-time matchup between the teams, with four of those games taking place in Washington, D.C. The game is set to tip off at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

ABOUT THE HENS
- Head coach Sarah Jenkins returns for her third season at Delaware, holding a 27-34 career record. She brings back eight players from the 2023-24 squad, preserving over 50 percent of the team's scoring, and adds five talented newcomers for a 13-player roster ready to elevate the program.
- Key returning players include Sydney Boone, Tara Cousins, Ande'a Cherisier, Rebecca Demeke, and Chloe Wilson. Graduate transfer Ella Wanzer from Binghamton and junior transfer Alieghya Bartholomew from Gulf Coast State join the team, each looking to make an immediate impact.
- Under Coach Jenkins, Delaware has won its season openers in both of her previous seasons, and the Blue Hens aim to extend that streak to three with Monday's game.
- Delaware was projected to finish sixth in the CAA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Graduate student Wilson earned a spot on the Preseason All-CAA Second Team, while teammates Cousins and cherisier received All-CAA Honorable Mentions.
- The Blue Hens' non-conference schedule includes four home games, six road games, and a competitive Thanksgiving tournament in New Orleans. The 12-game slate features matchups against George Washington (Nov. 4), La Salle (Nov. 9), Temple (Nov. 12), Colgate (Nov. 11), Providence (Nov. 24), Big Easy Classic (Nov. 29-30), Delaware State (Dec. 7), Villanova (Dec. 11), Navy (Dec. 19), Old Dominion (Dec. 22), and Harvard (Dec. 30).
- Captains for the 2024-25 season are Sydney Boone, Tara Cousins, and Ella Wanzer, who will lead the Blue Hens both on and off the court.
- George Washington finished the 2023-24 season with a 13-18 overall record (6-12 in the Atlantic-10), showing strength at home with a 10-5 record.Their season ended in the second round of the A-10 Championship.
- GW returns five key players: senior Maxine Engel, juniors Caia Loving and Natalia Sierra-Vargas, and sophomores Sara Lewis and Kamari Sims.
- Engel, GW's lone true senior, is the first to play all four years under head coach Caroline McCombs. Sims is GW's leading returning scorer, averaging 4.5 points per game last season.
- The group brings a combined 140 games of experience and 28 starts.
- Both teams will be kicking off their season against each other, with George Washington leading the all-time series 4-1.
- The last meeting was in the 2020-21 season, where GW claimed a 61-56 victory at home (Dec. 20).
- Delaware's last win over GW was nearly 40 years ago on Jan. 18, 1984, with a narrow 71-68 win.
