Track & Field Competes At 2024 CAA Indoor Championships

NEW YORKÂ -Â The University of Delaware track & field team headed back to the mecca, New York City, set to compete in the two-day 2024 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Indoor Championship inside the renowned Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory Feb. 22-23. The Blue Hens earned 14 points to finish in 12th place as Northeastern was crowned CAA champions for the first time in program history.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- On the field side, Kosie Nkwonta led the way racking up five points for the Blue Hens competing in the weight throw on Thursday and shot put on Friday.
- Bridget Joyce, the pole vault vet, earned Delaware some points after leaping the 3.70m bar, which also tied for her career-best.
- On the running side, a pair of Blue Hen athletes advanced to Friday's finals headlined by the rookies Leah Clear and Kadence Dumas competing in the mile and 800m, respectively.
- Between 13 athletes, Delaware set 17Â personal-best times/marks in the two-day event.
THURSDAY
- Destiny DeBlock and Sarah Sharp get Championship Thursday started in the Pentathlon. Competing in her last collegiate indoor pent, DeBlock finished in ninth place with 3,085 points while Sharp, who was competing in her first-ever collegiate indoor pent, posted a career-best 2,870 points (11th place).
- Nkwonta saw her fourth attempt at the weight throw fly through the air for 17.16m to finish the event in seventh place.
- In the mile, Clear saw her time 5:00.35 (eighth overall, fourth in her heat) was good enough to advance her to Friday's finals.
- Dumas made her presence known in her championship debut in the 800m. The freshman's PR time of 2:11.03 advanced her to Friday's finals, was faster than the previous CAA meet record and sits third in school history.Â
- The DMR squad of Marissa Dailey, Lauren Leath, Jenna Scandale and Tiffany Herrera an a time of 12:14.20 (seventh place), which helped the Blue Hens score some points along with ranking 93rd in the NCAA.
- Long Jump: Victoria Henry, PR-5:41m (14th place); Chali Baumann, PR-5.33m (17th place); Sara Manson, PR-5.03m (25th place)
- Weight Throw: Mackenzie Stephens, 14.05m (22nd place)
- Mile Trial: Marissa Dailey, SB-5:06.55 (16th place); Tiffany Herrera, PR-5:06.77 (17th place)
- 60m Hurdles Trial: Jayde McDermid, 9.45 (18th place)
- 400m Trial: Alexa Dougherty, PR-59.92 (25th place); Leath, PR-57.55 (12th place, second in her heat)
- 60m Trial: Henry, 7.78 (23rd place); Jacquelyn Rolle, PR-7.84 (26th place); Jahnia Hodge, 7.95 (28th place); Taylor Johnson, 7.99 (31st place)
- 200m Trial: Rolle, PR-25.37 (22nd place, second in her heat); Johnson, SB-25.65 (27th place); McDermid, PR-25.78 (28th place)
- 5000m Final: Molly Lashley, PR-17:25.73 (12th place); Danielle Eshelman, 17:57.18 (17th place)
- Nkwonta opened up the Blue Hen scoring on Championship Friday competing in the shot put. The senior finished in sixth place thanks to her fifth throw flying through the air for 13.50m.
- On the track side, Clear also racked up some points for Delaware in the mile courtesy of her PR time of 4:57.05, which now sits tied for 10th in school history.
- Excitement brewed for the 800m as Dumas was ready to take the event by storm. The rook also earned points for the Blue & Gold with a time of 2:12.24 (eighth place)
- The 4x800m relay team of Leath, Hannah Smalley, Scandale and Clear earned the final points for the Blue Hens with a time of 9:15.89 (seventh place).
- High Jump: Madison Shaffery, 1.56m (15th place); DeBlock, 1.56m (18th place)
- Triple Jump: Jahnia Hodge, 11.53m (10th place); Manson, 10.89m (18th place)
- 3000m: Lashley, PR-9:58.91 (17th place); Stephanie Herrera, PR-10:21.36 (26th place); Eshelman, 10:26.58 (27th place)Â
- 4x400m Relay: Dougherty, Johnson, Rolle and McDermid, 3:56.98 (ninth place)
- For 10 Blue Hen athletes, this is the second time ever competing in a championship of its kind
- Special moment: This was DeBlock's final collegiate indoor pentathlon and Sharp's first of her career.
- Northeastern swept the team championships as the men's repeated as CAA champs while and women's won for the first time in program history.

The Blue Hens will take the next four weeks to prepare to open outdoor season on Friday, Mar. 22 at the Fred Hardy Invitational, hosted by the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va.Â
