Powers' Five Goals Leads Men's Lacrosse Past Hampton, 21-3

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team bludgeoned the Hampton University Pirates 21-3 Saturday afternoon on the road as the Blue Hens improved to 5-3 and 3-0 in CAA action while the Pirates dropped to 0-9 and 0-3 in conference play.
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Brendan Powers led all scorers on the day with five goals.
- John McCurry and Cam Acchione each finished with a hat trick.
- Mike Robinson scored twice and had three assists.
- JP Ward added one goal and tallied three assists, extending his points streak to 45 straight games.
- Nick Fish was Delaware's fifth multi-goal scorer on the day as the senior netted his first two career goals.
- Freshmen Ryder Villani and Owen McGee tallied their first career collegiate goals.
- Sophomore Finn Morgan netted his first goal of the season.
- In total, 11 different Blue Hens players scored in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saturday's contest was scoreless through the first eight minutes of action until Matt Acchione put the Hens on the board first, beginning an 8-0 Delaware run. The Blue Hens made it 5-0 before the end of the first as all five goals were scored by five different Delaware players.
- In the second, Powers scored his second goal of the game just 30 seconds into the quarter on Ward's second assist. McCurry followed suit with his first of the day and the Hens held a 7-0 lead with 12:23 to go before the break. At the 2:56 mark, Powers recorded a hat trick to put UD up 8-0. Matt Hunter put the Pirates on the board with less than two minutes to go before halftime, but the Blue & Gold took an 8-1 lead into the locker room.
- After the break, the Hens tied their highest scoring quarter of the year as Delaware put up seven goals in the third quarter, including two more from Powers and McCurry, to take a 15-1 lead into the final 15 minutes of action.
- Villani scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, beginning a string of firsts for the Blue Hens as Morgan scored his first of the year at the 11:26 mark to extend the UD lead to 18-1. With 9:23 left, Fish scored the first of his two fourth quarter goals on an assist from McGee to make it 20-1. McGee followed his first career assist with his first goal and Delaware's 21st of the game to seal the Hens' third straight CAA victory.
GAME NOTES
- Three Blue Hens players tallied their first career goals as McGee, Villani, and Fish all found the back of the cage for the first time.
- JP Ward is one goal and five assists away from becoming the third player in Delaware men's lacrosse history to have 100-career goals and 100-career assists.
- This was Delaware's first game of 20 or more goals in a game.
- The Hens went 5-for-5 in extra-man opportunities.
- Saturday's game was the third time the Blue Hens took 50 or more shots in a game.
- This was the fifth time this season a Blue Hens player scored five or more goals in a game.
