Hess Pitches Second Straight Shutout To Win Rubber Game Over Hofstra

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware's Morgan Hess followed up yesterday's no-hit performance with her second straight shutout as the Blue Hens took the rubber game from Hofstra, 4-0. Delaware won their 18th conference game of the season tying a program record.

- Morgan Hess allowed just three hits and struckout four while pitching all seven innings.Â
- Julia Boyet went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
- Katie Scheivert drove in two runs with a single and scored two runs.Â
- Lillie Scheivert went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
- Sydney Shaffer went 1-for-3.
- Maddie Fife had a sacrifice fly.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hess allowed her first hit of the series to leadoff the game on a double, but two popouts and a strikeout stranded a runner in scoring position. Delaware scored in the first inning for a second straight game, as an error and back-to-back singles by Boyet and Shaffer loaded the bases with one out. Fife drove a ball to the fence that was caught, but Katie Scheivert scored to make it 1-0.
- Hess pitched a perfect second inning with a strikeout and stranded two runners on in the third and fourth.Â
- A strikeout ended a 1-2-3 fifth inning.
- Delaware had their highest scoring inning of the weekend in the fifth, as Lillie Scheivert singled and Hess doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Katie Scheivert brought them both home with a double, and Boyet scored her with a single to put Delaware up 4-0.
- Hess struckout a hitter in the scoreless sixth, and allowed just a single in the seventh to seal the win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Hess pitched her second shutout of the season, and in as many days, and her fifth complete game. It was also her 30th complete game of the season.
- Delaware has recorded back-to-back shutouts three times this season, also done on April 10 and April 12 and on March 1 and 3.Â
- Hess joins Emily Winburn as Delaware pitchers this season with shutouts on back-to-back days, as Winburn did so on March 29 and 30 against Drexel, while also picking up a save in between.Â
- Boyet recorded her 11th multi-hit game of the season and second of the weekend.Â
- Delaware did not allow an earned run in the three-game series, and have allowed three runs or fewer in 10-straight games.Â
- Delaware tied a program record with 18 conference wins, also done in 2023 and 2000.Â
