Track & Field Looking to Repeat History at the 2024 CAA Outdoor Championships Starting Friday

ELON, N.C. - Looking to hoist its third Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship in program history, the University of Delaware track & field team is prepared to compete in the 2024 CAA Outdoor Championships May 10-11 from Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex in Elon, N.C., hosted by Elon University. Under the guidance of second-year head coach Kenyetta Iyevbele, 29 enthusiastic Blue Hen athletes, including 13 returning competitors, are geared up to etch their names in history by seizing the outdoor championship in grand style.

HENS ON THE TRACK
- The Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex holds special significance for Delaware, as the last time the program clinched victory was in 2019, led by Halima Scott, the sole remaining Blue Hen from that triumphant team.
- Scott, a silver medalist in last year's outdoor 400m, leads the charge with a sixth-seeded time of 55.06, and will be joined by Lauren Leath (58.92) in the prelims.
- In the 4x400m relay, Scott, Leah Clear, Leath, and Kadence Dumas aim for a podium finish with their third-seeded time of 3:46.33.
- Dumas enters the 800m seeded fifth with a time of 2:10.45 while Hannah Smalley (2:24.62) seeks to contribute to the team's score.
- Sarah Daniels holds the fifth-seed time of 10:36.11 in the 3000m Steeplechase and will have Carolyn Coletti running beside her with a 10th-seeded time of 11:37.48.
- Molly Lashley is seeded eighth in the 10,000m with a time of 35:55.16 while the 4x100m relay team, consisting of Victoria Henry, Taylor Johnson, Jahnia Hodge and Scott, also holds an eighth-seeded time of 47.20.
- Alexa Doughtery competes solo for the Blue Hens in the 400m hurdles, with a 10th-seeded time of 1:05.92.
- In the 5000m, Daniels (10th seed, 17:06.72) and Lashley (11th seed, 17:13.17) aim for scoring positions. Joining them will be Stephanie Herrera (17:26.91), Marissa Dailey (17:44.54) and Tiffany Herrera (17:51.69).Â
- The 1500m sees Clear (11th seed, 4:35.73), Dailey (4:39.77), Danielle Eshelman (4:46.48), and Nicole Re, all aiming to score.
- Jayde McDermid eyes scoring in the 100m hurdles (14.83), alongside the 100m dash trio of Johnson (12.04), Henry (12.27) and Rolle (12.23), as well as the 200m duo of Johnson (25.04) and Rolle (25.34).
HENS IN THE FIELD
- The heptathlon trio in Alicia Lehman-Woodyard (third seed, 4,576 points), Sarah Sharp (ninth seed, 3,916 points), and Destiny DeBlock, aim to bolster the Blue Hens' scoring.
- Kosie Nkwonta (fourth seed, 56.95m) and Mackenzie Stephens (12th seed, 51.45m) will represent Delaware in the hammer throw, while Rachel Schmitt (sixth seed, 41.25m) will be the lone Blue Hen competing in the javelin.
- Hodge seeks a podium finish in the triple jump with her fourth-seeded mark of 12.15m while Sara Mason (10.98m) will also compete in the event looking to contribute to the team's scoring.Â
- Bridget Joyce, a seasoned pole vaulter and last year's bronze medalist, targets the podium again, entering the event seeded sixth (3.65m).
- Lehman-Woodyard (eighth seed, 5.85m), Manson (5.47m), and Henry (5.46m) will compete in the long jump.
- Lehman-Woodyard transitions to the high jump with her 11th-seeded mark of 1.64m and will be joined by Madison Shaffery (1.60m), Brooke Duke (1.59m) and DeBlock.Â
- Nkwonta also competes in the shot put, aiming for a scoring position with her 12th-seeded mark of 13.67m.
THE CHAMPIONSHIP SLATE
- The pursuit of CAA outdoor glory commences at 8 a.m. on Friday with the 10,000m race with the decathlon 100m (9:30 a.m.) and heptathlon 100m hurdles (9:45 a.m.) immediately following.
- The first field event will start at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw and additionally, field event champs will be crowned in men's and women's javelin (11 a.m./12:30 p.m.), men's hammer throw (1 p.m.), women's long jump (2 p.m.), women's pole vault (3:30 p.m.), men's long jump (5 p.m.) and men's pole vault (6 p.m.).
- Running prelims will start at 3 p.m. with the 3,000m Steeplechase (7:25 p.m.) concluding day one of action by awarding points and medals as finals.Â
- Championship Saturday begins with the resumption of the heptathlon starting at 9:30 a.m. along with the remaining field events: women's shot put (10 a.m.), women's high jump (10 a.m.), men's triple jump (11:30 a.m.), men's shot put (12:30 p.m.), women's discus (12:30 p.m.), women's triple jump (2 p.m.), men's high jump (3 p.m.) and men's discus (3 p.m.).Â
- The 4x100m relay kicks off the running finals slate at 1 p.m., leading to the exhilarating conclusion with the men's 4x400m relay crowing the outdoor championship.
IT'S NOTEWORTHY
- This will be the first CAA outdoor championships for 14 Blue Hen athletes with 10 being freshmen.
- Delaware's best finish under the leadership of coach Iyevbele is fifth place garnering 78.5 points and five medalists – two gold, one silver and two bronze – in 2023.Â
- Blue Hen alums Sarah Hillman (56.75m, 2017) and Megan Albamonti (55.78, 2022) hold CAA outdoor track & field all-time records and championship meet records in the discus throw and javelin, respectively.
- Delaware alum Holly Manning joins the pair in the championship meet record books holding the 800m crown with a time of 2:06.24.
