ANN ARBOR, Mich. - University of Delaware volleyball was defeated by Michigan in five sets (27-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-27, 4-15) in their season opener on Friday, August 30, 2024.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Savannah Seemans had a match-high 17 kills and added 21 digs.
- Lily Rogers had a match-high 47 assists and added 10 digs and six blocks.Â
- Kirah Johnson had 12 kills, hit .310, and recorded six blocks.
- Anna Logan Gillens recorded career-highs in kills with 15 and blocks with four.
- Cadence Nguyen had career-highs in digs with 24 and assists with 5.Â
- Gha'Naye Whitfield-Moss had nine kills and five blocks.Â
- Making her Blue Hen debut, Raina Hughes had six kills and three blocks.
- Making her collegiate debut, Taylor Holly recorded seven digs.Â
- Hannah Wright had eight digs.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Delaware hit .319 in the opening set, their best of the match. Johnson, Seemans, and Gillens all had four kills and Hughes added three, while Rogers had 13 assists.
- Back-to-back kills by Hughes put Delaware up 7-4. Later on, Seemans had two straight kills to put Delaware ahead 13-12. Gilllens put UD up 19-18 with two kills in a row.
- Michigan scored four straight to go up 24-22, but a kill by Seemans, an ace by Wright, and a block by Johnson and Rogers gave Delaware a 25-24 lead. They closed out the set with a kill and a block by Johnson and Rogers to go up 1-0.
- The Blue Hens held Michigan to a match-low .125 hitting percentage in the second. Seemans had five kills in the set and Rogers had 11 assists.
- Michigan quickly went up 8-3, but Delaware scored five of the next six points to cut the deficit to 9-8.Â
- Delaware took their first lead of the set at 15-14 after kills by Whitfield-Moss and Gillens before stretching the lead to 24-21. Seemans capped off the set with a kill to put Delaware up 2-0.Â
- Seemans and Johnson both had four kills in the third and Rogers added 10 more assists.
- Michigan took an 11-7 lead and maintained a 15-12 lead. UD scored six of the next seven points to go up 18-16, as Whitfield-Moss recorded a block and kill and Rogers had an ace.Â
- Delaware led 23-22 before Michigan came from behind to take the third.Â
- Gillens had five kills in the fourth and Rogers had 12 assists.
- There were 16 ties and 4 lead changes in the fourth, the closest set of the match. After Michigan went ahead 10-7, a kill by Seemans and blocks by Gillens, Johnson, and Rogers sparked a 4-0 run to put the Blue Hens up 11-10.Â
- Delaware battled back again to tie the match at 16, 18, 20, 23, 24, and 25, but Michigan scored the final two points to force a decisive set.Â
- Michigan quickly took control of the fifth set to win 15-4 and take the match.Â
MATCH NOTES
- Delaware's nine-match road win streak was snapped. It was the second longest active streak in the country.Â
- Rogers had 47 assists after having 35 for the season last year. Her 47 assists were her most since having 48 against Stony Brook on Oct. 16, 2022. Her 10 digs were also her most since having 20 on that same date.Â
- Seemans is now up to 871 career kills and 1,034Â digs. She recorded her sixth career 20-dig game.Â
- Wright's eight digs were her most since having eight on Sept. 11, 2021 against Wichita State.Â
- Nguyen came into the season with seven career digs, and finished with 24 during tonight's game. It's the first 20-dig game in a season opener for Delaware since Andie Hanus had 23 in 2019 and the most in a season opener since Ariel Shonk had 27 in 2015 against Southern Illinois.Â
- Delaware had two players record at least 20 digs in a game for the first time since Nov. 5, 2022 against William & Mary, when Eileen Gex (22) and Seemans (20) both accomplished it.Â
- Holly's seven digs were the most by a Delaware player making their collegiate debut since Rogers had 11 on Feb. 26, 2021 against Temple.Â
