Volleyball Completes Reverse Sweep Over Middle Tennessee

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware volleyball defeated Middle Tennessee in reverse sweep fashion (19-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-22, 15-10) to extend its win streak to three. UD improved its record to 3-2 in Conference USA play, while MTSU fell to 1-4.Â
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Raina Hughes recorded a team-best 14 kills and hit .344 with four blocks.Â
- Anna Logan Gillens tallied 13 kills and three blocks
- Asia Murray had eight kills and five blocks.Â
- Aubrey Lyssy and Kennedi Inman combined for 42 assists. Lyssy had 22 assists, six digs, and two kills while Inman posted 20 assists and four digs.
- Cadence Nguyen had 18Â digs and seven assists.
- Jayda Redd recorded 17 digs, four aces, and five kills.Â
- Thalia Yancey recorded 10 digs.Â
- Sila Ozyurek notched six blocks and four kills.Â
HOW ITÂ HAPPENED
FIRST SET
- Both teams played evenly in the early going, with the score tied at 10. MTSU then scored five straight to lead 15-10.Â
- Delaware evened the score at 18 after a 3-0 run, but another 5-0 run by Middle Tennessee put them ahead for good.Â
- Gillens and Dylan Norris each had two kills in the first set.Â
SECONDÂ SET
- The Blue Raiders got off to a hot start in the second, leading 7-2, before six-straight points from UD put them ahead 8-7. Lyssy had an ace and a kill during the run.Â
- Delaware extended its lead to 16-12 after a block from Gillens and Murray, but MTSU scored five-straight to take a one-point lead. With the score tied at 18, the Blue Raiders closed the set by scoring six of the final eight points to take the set.Â
- Hughes and Norris each had two kills in the set.Â
THIRD SET
- Delaware began its comeback in the third. With the score tied at five, UD scored three-straight to take an 8-5 lead and never looked back.Â
- Five-straight points pushed Delaware's lead to 14-7, then the Blue Hens scored six of the next seven points to go up 21-11. Ozyurek and Hughes each recorded two blocks in the stretch. A kill by Hughes and back-to-back kills from Gillens gave Delaware a 25-16 set win.Â
- Hughes had six kills in the set and Lyssy (seven) and Inman (six) combined for 13 of Delaware's 15 assists. Redd had eight digs, the most by a Blue Hen in any set this season.Â
FOURTH SET
- Set four featured a whopping 17 ties and seven lead changes.Â
- Middle Tennessee never led by more than a point and Delaware took leads of 11-9, 14-12, and 16-14. With the score 21-20, Delaware scored five of the last six points of the set to force a deciding fifth. Redd had two kills and an ace in the final stretch and Ozyurek had a block and kill.Â
- Redd had three kills in the set and Nguyen had four digs.Â
FIFTH SET
- Delaware exploded offensively in the fifth set, landing 11 of its 19 attack attempts with just one error for a .556 hitting percentage.Â
- MTSU scored the first two points of the set and led 4-3 despite a 3-0 run from Delaware. Another 3-0 burst from the Blue Hens gave UD a 6-4 lead they never relinquished. Gillens had back-to-back kills and Murray had a kill to bring the score to 11-6. Gillens added her final kill to put the score at 12-7, and Delaware completed its comeback after an attack error and two service errors from MTSU to win the game.Â
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Delaware improved to 23-7 under Lambert in the month of October and 20-2 over the last three seasons.Â
- Gillens recorded her 500th career kill during the match.Â
- Gillens has double-digit kills in six of her last seven matches.Â
- Hughes' 14 kills were a season-high. In her last four matches, she is hitting .346 with 35 kills in 13 sets.Â
- Murray recorded five blocks for the third-straight match and seventh time this season.
- Redd's 17 digs were a career-high.Â
- Lyssy's 22 assists were a new career-high.Â
- This was the first time Delaware had two players record at least 20 assists in the same match since Lily Rogers and Ezgi Basaranlar did so against Hofstra on Oct. 23, 2022.Â
- Nguyen has had double-digit digs in six-straight matches.Â
- Yancey has at least 10 digs in three-consecutive matches.
- This was Delaware's seventh reverse sweep victory under Lambert. UD had two reverse sweep victories in 2022, three in 2023, and one in 2024.Â
