Kerwood Dominates Saint Joseph's in Softball's Seventh Consecutive Win

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball's Billie Kerwood dominated Saint Joseph's in the Blue Hen's 6-2 win over Saint Joseph's, UD's eighth consecutive win. Kerwood pitched seven shutout relief innings and struckout a season-best 12 while allowing just a hit and a walk.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Sydney Shaffer and Lillie Scheivert hit two-run home runs. Scheivert scored two runs and added an infield single in a two-hit day.
Sorella Gallucci continued her hot-hitting with two more extra base hits with a double and a triple. She also scored two runs.
Luzon hit a go-ahead pinch-hit two run double.
Morgan Hess, Chloe Blantz, and Olivia Marinucci all had hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the first three batters reached base and St. Joe's scored two runs, Kerwood came on in relief and struck out two and recorded a groundout to stop the bleeding. She then pitched a 1-2-3 second inning with a strikeout and recorded two groundouts and a flyout in a perfect third.
Delaware tied the game in the third inning after Gallucci tripled and Scheivert hit her first home run of the season.
Kerwood struckout two more in a perfect fourth. St. Joe's had their only hit off Kerwood in the fifth with a double, but Kerwood struckout two more to keep the Hawks off the board again.
The Blue Hens scored four in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Gallauci doubled and Scheivert singled to set up a pinch hit opportunity for Luzon. Luzon doubled on the first pitch to put Delaware up 4-2. With two outs, Shaffer homered to center field to give Delaware a four-run lead.
Cahalan threw a baserunner out attempting to steal after a strikeout-wild pitch, and Kerwood recorded two more strikeouts in a scoreless sixth.
Kerwood shut the door in the seventh with a groundout and two strikeouts.

GAME NOTES

Kerwood's 12 strikeouts were the most by a Delaware player since Kiersten Coffman struckout a program record 17 against Morgan State on March 30, 2016.
Kerwood's 12 strikeouts were one shy of her career-high. She had 13 against Akron last season on February 25. Her 12 strikeouts are tied for the most by a CAA player this season.
Kerwood has 38 strikeouts in her 24.2 innings in her last five games.
Gallucci has been on fire over her last six games, hitting .615/.688/1.231 with four doubles and two triples.
Scheivert's home run was the second of her career, and first since April 10, 2024 against Delaware State.
Shaffer's home run was the ninth of her career and fourth of the season, a new career high.
Luzon is 6-for-11 as a pinch hitter with five RBIs and three doubles.
Delaware's eight-game win streak is tied for the ninth longest in NCAA. Only Oklahoma (26), Austin Peay (19), Texas (14), Washington (14), California (13), LSU (9), Liberty (9), and Marist (9) have longer.
