Softball Blasts Three Home Runs Against Stony Brook, Wins Eighth Straight Game

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball hit three home runs as it defeated Stony Brook, 5-1, to begin its CAA weekend series. Delaware has won eight consecutive games and is 4-0 in the CAA.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Katie Scheivert, Ellie Talley, and Morgan Hess hit home runs to account for all five runs.
Sydney Shaffer had a double and a run scored.
Gianna Costaro went 1-for-3.
Veronica Diomede had a single in two at bats.
Billie Kerwood pitched all seven innings and allowed just two hits and one run while striking out eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Scheivert homered on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning to give Delaware a 1-0 lead.
Hess drew a leadoff walk in the second before Talley hit her first home run of her career.
Stony Brook got a run back in the third on a double, but Kerwood proceeded to strike out the next three hitters.
Shaffer doubled to lead off the third inning and Hess hit the Blue Hen's third home run in as many innings to take a 5-1 lead.
Kerwood did not allow a hit in the final four innings, and struck out two in the seventh to seal the win.

GAME NOTES

Scheivert's home run was the second of her career and first career leadoff home run. She last homered on March 4, 2023 against Norfolk State.
Hess has hit four home runs over her last four games. She now has 10 career home runs at Delaware, becoming the 14th Delaware player to reach 10 home runs. Her home run was also the 39th of her career.
Shaffer is on a season-best six-game hit streak. She is hitting .611 (11-for-18) during the streak.
Kerwood has thrown three-straight complete games. In her last two games, she has allowed just three hits and struck out 20 in 14 innings.
Delaware has hit a home run in five-straight games, and multiple home runs in four straight. Delaware last hit a home run in five straight games in February 2022, when it did it in six straight games - including five-straight games with multiple home runs.
Delaware's three home runs were its most in a home game since March 10, 2021 against Coppin State.
Delaware's eight game win streak is tied for 11th longest in NCAA. Only Oklahoma (26), Austin Peay (21), Texas (14), Washington (14), California (14), Marist (11), LSU (10), Liberty (10), and Florida Atlantic (9) have longer.
Delaware improved to 9-1 all time against Stony BRook and has won five straight.

Delaware continues the series tomorrow and Sunday. Saturday's game has been moved to 3:00 p.m., while Sunday's game is now a noon start.
