Seven-Run Fifth Inning Powers Softball Past Stony Brook

NEWARK, Del. -Â University of Delaware softball used a seven-run fifth inning to come from behind and defeat Stony Brook 9-3. Delaware has won nine games in a row and improved to 14-8 overall and 5-0 in the CAA.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Kristen Luzon delivered the big hit by hitting a pinch-hit go-ahead three-run home run.Â
- Ellie Talley homered for a second straight game - a two-run shot.Â
- Mary Beth Cahalan hit a three-run double.Â
- Katie Scheivert, Sorella Gallucci, and Ryleigh Thomas all recorded hits.Â
- Billie Kerwood earned the win in relief pitching 3.1 shutout innings with just one hit allowed and four strikeouts.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stony Brook scored a first inning run on a double to take a 1-0 lead.Â
- Talley hit a two-out two-run opposite field home run in the second inning to give Delaware a 2-1 lead.Â
- Delaware preserved the lead in the top of the third thanks to Ellie Mulligan. With runners on first and second and two outs, Mulligan cut down the tying run at the plate after a base hit to right field to keep Delaware ahead.Â
- Stony Brook retook the lead with two outs in the top of the fourth on a double. Kerwood came in and stranded the bases loaded to retire the side.Â
- Cahalan helped Delaware through a scoreless fifth inning by throwing out a runner attempting to steal second base.Â
- Delaware exploded for seven runs in the fifth to take the lead. Talley walked and Thomas had a pinch hit single to set up a pinch hit opportunity for Luzon with two runners on. Luzon hit the first pitch for a three-run home run to give Delaware a 5-3 lead. Scheivert followed that up with a. double off the wall and Gallucci singled and stole second base. Back-to-back walks by Shaffer and Costaro brought home another run, then Cahalan hit a three-run double to put UD up 9-3.Â
- Kerwood pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning to end the game, recording a strikeout in each inning to seal Delaware's win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware has hit a home run in six-straight games, and multiple home runs in five straight. Delaware last hit a home run in six straight games in February 2022, including five-straight games with multiple home runs.Â
- Delaware has homered in three-straight home games for the first time since March 2021.Â
- Kerwood became the first pitcher since Jordan Cargile in May 2018 to be the winning pitcher in four-straight Delaware wins.Â
- In Kerwood's last two games, she has allowed just four hits and struck out 24 in 17.1Â innings.Â
- Luzon is 7-for-13 as a pinch hitter this season with four extra base hits and eight RBIs.Â
- Talley became the first Delaware freshman to hit a home run in back-to-back conference games since Anna Steinmetz in 2016.Â
- Delaware's seven-run fifth inning was its largest inning of the season.Â
- Delaware's nine game win streak is tied for 10th longest in NCAA. Only Oklahoma (26), Austin Peay (21), Texas (16), California (15), Liberty (12), Marist (11), LSU (10), and Grand Canyon (10) have longer.Â
