Kerwood Dominant Again as Softball Sweeps Stony Brooks for 10th Straight Win

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball completed a weekend sweep of Stony Brook to win its 10th straight game and improved its record to 6-0 in the CAA and 15-8 overall. Billie Kerwood earned the win in all three games of the series, and has been Delaware's winning pitcher in five consecutive games.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS

Kerwood pitched five shutout relief innings and struck out 11 while allowing just one walk and four hits.
Katie Scheivert, Sydney Shaffer, Gianna Costaro, Morgan Hess, and Veronica Diomede all had hits.
Scheivert and Graceyn Frost scored runs.
Costaro and Hess recorded RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Josie Crossman threw a perfect first inning. After Scheivert singled to lead off the bottom of the first and Sorella Gallucci bunted her over, Costaro drove her in with a single to left field to give Delaware a 1-0 lead.
Stony Brook tied it in the second inning but Mary Beth Cahalan threw out her second base runner of the weekend trying to steal to limit further damage.
Stony Brook loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but a fielder's choice and two strikeouts by Kerwood helped Delaware escape a jam.
Kerwood struck out three in the fourth and two in the fifth.
In the sixth, Kerwood struck out the side. Shaffer doubled to left field to lead off the sixth inning. Pinch runner Frost scored on a single by Hess to give the Blue Hens the lead.
With two outs, back-to-back singles by Stony Brook put runners on the corners, but Kerwood left the tying and go-ahead runs on base with a strikeout to end it.

GAME NOTES

Delaware has won 10 straight games for the second consecutive year, as it won 12 last season from March 13-30.
Kerwood earned the win in all three games of the series and has been the winning pitcher in Delaware's last five games and in seven of Delaware's 10 games during the streak.
Kerwood has gone four straight games allowing one run or fewer. Over that stretch, she has pitched 22.1 innings, allowed just eight hits, nine walks, one run, a .108 BAA, and has struck out 35.
Kerwood has two double-digit strikeout games this season, the first Delaware pitcher in two years to have two (Emily Winburn in 2023).
Kerwood struck out her 100th batter of the season during today's game, the 15th Division I pitcher this season to reach the mark.
Delaware's 10 game win streak is tied for ninth longest in NCAA. Only Oklahoma (28), Austin Peay (21), Texas (16), California (16), Liberty (11), Marist (11), and LSU (11) have longer.
Delaware is 11-1 all-time against Stony Brook and has was won seven straight dating back to last season.
