Softball Starts CAA Play With 14-3, Five-Inning Win Over Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - University of Delaware softball won their CAA opening game against Drexel on the road, 14-3 in five innings, and improved their overall record to 9-8 and above .500 for the first time this season. Delaware's 14 runs set a program record for most runs scored ever in a conference opening game. Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Chloe Blantz finished a triple shy of the cycle. She hit a two-run home run, drove in three runs, and scored a pair of runs.Â
- Katie Scheivert, Sydney Shaffer, Gianna Costaro, Morgan Hess both went 2-for-4. Scheivert recorded three RBIs and a run scored. Costaro had a run scored and RBI. Hess scored two runs and drove in a run.
- Veronica Diomede scored three runs and went 2-for-2 with a walk.Â
- Grace Hausamann scored two runs and recorded a hit.Â
- Sorella Gallucci went 1-for-2 with a run scored.Â
- Josie Crossman pitched 3.1 innings of relief and allowed just one run and no walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware put up six runs in the second inning to go up big early. Cahalan, Hausamann, Blantz, Costaro, and Hess all drove in runs, with Blantz's Costaro's and Hess' all coming with two outs.Â
- UD added three runs in the third, all with two outs. Scheivert singled home Diomede before Blantz hit a two-run home run to give Delaware a 9-2 lead.Â
- Crossman pitched a scoreless third inning with two flyouts and a groundout.Â
- The Blue Hens scored three more in the fourth. After Gallucci, Hausamann, and Diomede all singled to load the bases, Scheivert brought in two runs with a single. Diomede added a run on a pass ball to give Delaware a 12-2 lead.Â
- Delaware took a 14-2 lead with two more runs in the fifth. Costaro singled and Hess doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Costaro scored on a wild pitch and Ellie Mulligan hit a pinch hit single to score Hess.
- Drexel scored a two-out run in the fifth but Crossman recorded the final out on a strikeout to end it. Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware has won back-to-back games by run rule for the first time since April 11 and April 17, 2021 - when they defeated Towson 17-2 and Hofstra 11-0.Â
- Delaware has won six consecutive games against Drexel dating back to 2023, outscoring the Dragons 33-7.Â
- Blantz's home run was the sixth of her career and third this season. She has hit three home runs in 17 games this season after hitting three in 52 games last season.Â
- This was Blantz's second game this year with at least three hits and three RBIs, also done on Feb. 23 against Penn.Â
- Blantz had multiple extra base hits in a game for the third time in her career (May 5, 2023 against Hampton and Feb. 17, 2024 against Akron).Â
- Scheivert's three RBIs tied a career-high, last done on April 5, 2023 against Saint Joseph's.Â
- Shaffer has recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games and in three of her last four games. She has six multi-hit games this year.Â
- Gallucci has a hit in three straight games, and is hitting .429 (3-for-7) over that span.Â
- Delaware's 14 runs were their most since scoring 15 last season on March 17.Â
- Delaware has won three consecutive conference opening games.Â
- Blantz became the first Delaware player to hit a home run in a conference opener since Hanna Garber on March 26, 2022 against UNCW.Â
